Citizen Teacher - teach what you know and love to a group of 9-14 year old students!
Last updated on October 16, 2002 Citizen Schools is looking for you!
We are an after-school and summer program for Boston Public School students ages 9-14. Citizen Schools works because dedicated individuals volunteer their time to share their skills and knowledge with small groups of children at Citizen Schools' sites in Boston Public Schools across the city. Apprenticeships are at the heart of Citizen Schools. Boston's best professionals, artisans, and tradespeople work directly with small groups of students to develop amazing products and performances that are valuable to the community and make the kids and the adults say, "WOW!" What is a Citizen Schools Apprenticeship? Citizen Schools Apprenticeship n. (sit-i-zen schoolz a-pren-tis-ship) 1. A team consisting of 2-4 adults (Citizen Teachers or CTs), 5-10 young people (apprentices) who work together once a week for ten sessions of 90 minutes each to produce a wonderful product or performance that adds value to the community in some way. 2. A chance for young people to "apprentice" with adult experts and gain experience. Many of our Citizen Schools apprenticeship products have met the needs of nonprofits, community organizations and businesses in Boston. For example, apprentices repaired computers to be donated to families and local businesses in Dorchester. In addition, past apprentices have designed marketing campaigns for the New England Aquarium and Codman Square Health Center, painted murals, made quilts for the babies of teenage mothers, cooked gourmet meals for seniors and much more.

Teach kids how business works...volunteer to teach a Junior Achievement program in the West Ottawa School District this spring!
Last modified at 2:21 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 1998
Junior Achievement of West Michigan Lake Shore, Inc. and West Ottawa Public Schools have created a progressive partnership that will offer 98 additional JA classes in grades Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th grade. Each classroom needs one volunteer to teach Junior Achievement material. JA will provide all material and all training. The only thing each volunteer needs is a willingness to help students understand business and the school to work connection. Kindergarten material "Ourselves" requires five visits, 25 minutes each. Students will learn the beginning concept of working, making money and saving to buy items. 1st grade material "Our Families" requires five visits, 30 minutes each. Students will learn the difference between a need and a want, as well as learning about many different career choices. 2nd grade material "Our Community" requires five visits, 35 minutes each. Students will learn about businesses in our community, government workers and of course how taxes work, as well as voting.

Have you ever taught abroad? Native speakers of any language
are not the same as those trained in the country. We as
native speakers add much to these programs. The idoms and
everyday normal conversation is worth it to the teachers who
teach their second language. Ask any of them. Would you like
to help an ESL teacher from another country improve his/her langage skills here in the USA. Call Helen Wu at 1-800-876- 2376 ext 442 or e-mail her at hwu@afs.org. Teachers are available from many different countries and many need places for the fall. Barbara Y.
