History of Volleyball
Volleyball was born into the world of sports in 1895 when William Morgan, director of the YMCA in Hollyoke, Mass., was casting about for a "new diversion" to supplement his organization's physical education program. He took as his basis the then popular German game called "Faustball" but reworked the rules considerably to give the new sport tighter competitive values. In 1900, volleyball crossed the border to Canada's YMCAs and regular inter-city competitions were staged in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. From then on, the popularity of volleyball spread throughout the world with the International YMCA movement. By the end of World War II, interest in the game had grown so much that the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was formed as governing committee for more than 120 national federations. The FIVB is now responsible for the organization of international championships, the adopting and improvement of rules of play, the instruction and certifying of referees and coaches and the general promotion of the game on a worldwide scale. It is the largest international sports governing body in the world, with 213 member Federations.

The top-four teams advance to the Games with one berth guaranteed for an Asian country. Italy, 6-0, and South Korea, 4-2, have secured two of the four spots. The Canadians, the lowest-seeded team in the eight-country competition at 14th in the world, are 0-6 and have no chance of going to Sydney in September. South Korea booked its Olympic ticket despite losing 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-7) to top-seeded and world No. 4 China. Croatia and China are both 4-2 heading into Sunday's final matches. Japan put its Olympic hopes in peril by blowing a two-set lead in a crucial 3-2 (26-28, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-9) loss to Croatia before 9,200 fans at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

High School Volleyball:
History Made at Cherry Hill West in Olympic Volleyball Thursday, April 5, 2001 By John Daglian
SJSports Staff Writer The 2001 Boys Volleyball just got underway on Monday April 2nd, but on April 5th the Cherry West Lions provided everyone with a bit of history by defeating the Cherry Hill East Cougars 4-15, 17-15 and 15-12. Prior to this match, Cherry Hill East had never lost to another Conference or South Jersey team. Since Volleyball began in 1994, the Cougars have been a powerhouse. They have always made it to the semi finals of the state tournament. The run includes a string of three consecutive state titles. The match started out like any typical East match as they came out fired up and dominated play in the first game. They won that game easily 15-4. However, between games 1 and 2 something must have clicked on the West sideline as they managed to elevate their play to East's level. West jumped out to a 10-1 lead in game 2, but East knows how to win and can handle almost any situation. They managed to scratch and claw their way back closing the gap to 13-12. West then took the reigns and got the important game point at 14-13. However, East wasn't done just yet tying the game at 14 and getting a match point at 15-14. West immediately got the side out and tied the game at 15. That's where it stood for several rotations before West could string together two points and force a third game.

By MICHAEL WARE How cold does it have to get before the women can add clothing?" On the coldest day of the Olympic beach volleyball competition-Sept. 25, the day of the women's final-it was a pertinent question from a s.o.c.o.g. official to her supervisor. The answer? 16šC. So while spectators rugged up against the cool southeasterly breeze and a 17š maximum, the four women on center court at Bondi stayed in nothing more than bikinis. But, hey, that's beach volleyball. The seemingly un-Olympic sidelights of this sport-from booming pop tracks to microphoned emcees driving the team supporters' chants-at times risked wresting attention from the on-court action. But as Australians Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst started to get the better of Brazil's Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede, the focus fixed on the play. Before the gold-medal match, everything had seemed to be going the Brazilians' way. They'd been world No. 1 (or, as the announcer put it, the "winningest team in history") for three years, while the Aussies-who, after winning bronze at Atlanta, had parted ways and joined forces again only last year-were No. 6. The Brazilians had won 20 of the 44 tournaments they'd entered and beaten the Australians in 14 of their 17 encounters. But all that counted for little on the sands of Bondi, as the 10,000-strong crowd urged Cook and Pottharst on to the greatest game of their lives.

The FIVB History The Founding
The first serious activity aimed at the founding of FIVB was an informal meeting held at the Graf Coffee House (now called Krivan) in Prague between representatives of the Polish, French, and Czech Volleyball Federations, followed by a more formal meeting in the council chambers of the Smichov brewery. The Czechoslovak delegation was headed by Mr Havel, President of the Federation, and composed of Messrs. Cebalka, Stolc, Pulkrat, Koutsky, and Vladimir Spirit. The French delegation was led by Paul Libaud, the newly elected President of the Federation, and included Messrs. Aujard and Babin. The Polish delegation included Mr. Wirszyllo, President of the Polish Federation, and his colleague Mr. Szeremeta
The organization of this first Constitutive Congress was entrusted to the President of the French Volleyball Federation, Paul Libaud. It took place in Paris from April 18 to 20, 1947, in the splendid rooms of the Grand Hotel with the participation of 14 Federations some of which had been delegated to act for other Federations as well.
The FIVB was born! It is certain that a decisive moment in the fascinating history of Volleyball's first hundred years was the founding of the FIVB (Féderation Internationale de Volleyball) when one day in April 1947 representatives of Belgium, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, France, Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Uruguay, USA and Yugoslavia met in Paris to found the FIVB. Frenchman, Paul Libaud, president of the French Federation was elected first President of the FIVB. The headquarters were established in Paris, where they remained for the first 37 years until 1984.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 as a recreational pastime by American William G. Morgan, the physical education director of the Young Men's Christian Association chapter in Holyoke, Massachusetts. His game, which he originally called "Mintonette," was treated as no more than casual recreation until American servicemen exported it during and after World War II to Asia and Europe. It quickly became popular not only in the United States, but around the world.

Each team has six players. Players score points by successfully landing the ball in the court of the opponent without its being returned. The ball is hit back and forth over the net with the hands, fists, forearms, head, or any part of the body above the waist. Only three hits are allowed on a side before the ball goes over the net and no player may strike the ball two times in a row. The only significant difference between men's and women's competitions is the height of the net, which is 7 feet 11 3/4 inches for men and 7 feet 4 1/2 inches for women.

History of Beach Volleyball
http://www.Volleyball.ORG Early 1920s Most accounts place the sport's origin in Santa Monica, California, where the first Volleyball courts were put up on the beach at the Playground (Santa Monica). Families played 6 vs. 6. Beach volleyball became the principal sport in a French nudist camp founded in Franconville (north-western suburb of Paris). First two-man beach volleyball game was played in Santa Monica, California. Beach volleyball appeared in Palavas, Lacanau and Royan (France), around Sofia (Bulgaria), Prague (Czechoslavakia), and Riga (Latvia). In the US, people would escape the depression by going to the beach, 4 vs 4 and 3 vs 3 games were played. First official two-man beach tournament was held, at State Beach in California. It was organized by Holtzman and won by Saenez-Harris. First tournament held in California (Los Angeles), awarded the best teams with a case of Pepsi as the winners' prize. 1950's Open tournaments held at five beaches in California. Santa Barbara State Corona Del Mar Laguna San Diego Beach volleyball became an entertainment show and Beauty Contests were included in the official program. First Brazil tournament took place, sponsored by a Newspaper Publishing company. Bernie Holtzman and Gene Selznick won an event that featured Greta Tyson, star of "Pajama Tops", as Queen of the Beach. Beach volleyball became more than a sport, it turned into a real show.
