PAINTS is the acronym for a VANS program, Professional Artists IN The Schools, which allows public schools throughout Nova Scotia to bring working visual artists into their classrooms. PAINTS began in 1994 when the Nova Scotia Department of Education transferred its Visiting Artists Program to VANS. This was done to facilitate program expansion through a new system of funding partnerships. The partners include government (the Department of Tourism and Culture), the private sector (corporate sponsors), the non-profit sector (VANS), and individual schools. Two examples of a PAINTS project at Whycocomagh Consolidated School and Environmental Centre, where students designed music CD cover art.

Saving the Visual Arts in Our Schools Bonnie Barbara Deutsch, Deutschsb@aol.com
The back of a Pepsi bottle I recently saw promotes SAVE MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS. I wrote Pepsi about how music has a voice and two movies where made about saving music in schools. No has done the same for the Visual Arts and we are being hurt much more than music programs. The visual arts are the first to go or get down graded to a cart or worse. I got a great response from Pepsi. If more people write, maybe we will see SAVE THE VISUAL ARTS IN OUR SCHOOLS on the back of a Pepsi bottle. By the way, if some of you have never been to the Pepsi corporate headquarters in Purchase, NY, they have a wonderful sculpture garden. They support the Arts and the person who called me was upset about my letter. Chiaroscuro, January/February 2001 Index Chiaroscuro Main Index

In Pacific cultures, indigenous languages, legends, storytelling, music and visualarts play significant roles in elementary education, in the schools and at
http://www.prel.org/products/Products/uh-art.htm
By Dr. Lori Phillips, Paul Sanders, and Dr. Thomas William Barlow* Although art has been a part of the curriculum in the U.S. since the 1880s, it has yet to achieve equal status with mathematics, language arts and science. After more than a century of neglect, change may be on the way. Not all children learn alike. This is particularly true in Pacific entities where the language of instruction and teaching philosophy are not particularly sensitive to prevailing cultures, social life, customs, and indigenous languages. Many may even be intimidated by core curriculum disciplines that do not seem applicable to their surroundings and might be more responsive to a curriculum that leans towards the arts.
The Problem
While interviewing early childhood teachers in Hawaii, Phillips (1993), an instructor in art education at the University of Hawaii, observed that most elementary teachers do not have the necessary educational background to teach visual arts. They are expected to teach subjects in the core disciplines, and intuitively to know something about art. The visual art curriculum draft specifies 90 minutes of art instruction weekly in grades 3-6 and 120 minutes in grades K-3. Very few schools in Hawaii and in other Pacific entities can boast of having dedicated art specialists who can effectively address these requirements. Generally, the teaching of art is entrusted to teachers who are uncomfortable teaching it to children. Others are absolutely convinced that art is an intuitive gift that cannot be taught.

The theories of performance and composition that they evolved are still controversial; taking a new and unique perspective, Johnson and his collaboratorsgive fresh insights into the music of our time.In the early 1950s, there were four musicians who associated closely with the New York School of painters: Edgard Varese, Stefan Wolpe, Morton Feldman and John Cage. This book explores the interaction and influences of the visual arts on these four seminal composers. PRODUCT CODE: 0815333641 USA/Canada: US$ 130.00

Interior Design
Associate Degree Program
Interior Design deals with the use of interior space to create stimulating and functional areas for work and play. Interior designers prepare drawings, select fabrics and accessories, develop budgets, and write specifications. They design window treatments, order furniture, specify lighting and other architectural details for construction. They assist in planning additions and renovations to existing structures as well as new construction. The Interior Design program prepares students for diverse entry level positions in computer-aided drafting, space planning, freelance design, kitchen and bath design, direct marketing, and assisting designers for both residential and commercial design companies. Interior Design courses develop an understanding of construction techniques and materials, extensive drawing and drafting skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with clients and suppliers. Students develop proficiency with the tools, media, and techniques of the interior design field. The classroom is used to simulate the conditions of the workplace. Coursework builds on the solid traditional skills and demonstrates their application in future technology, such as computerized drafting and space planning.

The Program in Visual Arts General Information Princeton Visual Arts Princeton or Art School? Getting In Majors and Certificates ... The Creative Environment at Princeton PRINCETON VISUAL ARTS Princeton University's Program in Visual Arts has a faculty of working artists of established reputation and outstanding teaching ability who offer studio courses in ceramics, computer graphics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. They give seminars and lectures in contemporary artistic practice and the history and theory of film as well. Whether students are interested in a program of study leading to a special major in studio arts or a certificate program, or desire to take just one or two courses, the visual arts program provides them with excellent physical facilities and an atmosphere of serious intellectual inquiry. Princeton believes that a strong liberal arts education provides an essential foundation for the aspiring artist and is the best platform for understanding the place of the arts in modern society. Even a cursory glace at the dominant journals devoted to art, photography, and cinema indicates that the visual artists of today are engaged in a dialogue with art history, information theory and literary criticism, and in debates about group identity and politics. As a result, the artist needs to be broadly familiar with the cultural history of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries and be aware of the multiplicity of issues that have excited artists of these periods; all of these things come together to form the ongoing traditions leading up to the present.

Grades 7 - 9
The visual arts workshop provides a supportive environment in a state of the arts facility for rising seventh through ninth grade students who are interested in exploration in printmaking, digital processes and visual communication. Students will also explore works of art by established artists who use ideas and techniques related to their studio experiences. Faculty members are college professors who hold the MFA or PhD degrees and have many experiences of public school art teaching. Classes will be small to allow for individual attention to students needs and interests. Printmaking will focus on creating "relief" prints. Students will learn how to make linoleum block print, a woodblock print, use stencils in printing, and incorporate Xerox transfers. Students will create images in both black and white and color. Blocks will be printed both by hand and by using a press. Digital Photo Workshop will focus on creative uses of digital photographic processes in visual communication. Students will explore a variety of methodologies and techniques using the computer programs Photoshop and Painter in tandem with the digital camera as new creative tools.

The Visual Arts program at The North Broward Preparatory Schools promotes a discipline-based approach to art education. This four-pronged approach includes art studio, art criticism, art history and aesthetics. The primary focus of our program is on studio work where students are challenged to use the elements and principals of design, various medias, and processes and techniques to express themselves through their artwork. Students are exposed to the significance of art throughout history and are made aware of how art reflects our culture as well as our values.
In middle school, the Visual Arts curriculum focuses on the elements and principals of design and the introduction of various media and techniques used by artists throughout history. The sixth graders are introduced to these concepts as they explore basic problems in drawing and painting. Seventh graders continue their development of technical skills and media exploration as they focus on art forms of other cultures. The focus in the eighth grade is on our own artistic heritage and the individual styles and techniques of famous artists.
