Yet, several years later, when her brother Mark arrived back home as a freshman from Wake Forest University, he was on the Dean's List. Their mother, Jean Holt, pondered the difference. After all, the siblings possessed similar intellectual aptitudes and attended equally challenging colleges. The difference, she surmised, was their high school experience. Susan attended a local private school where she received good preparation for life, but not college. Mark, on the other hand, sacrificed convenience for curriculum. He commuted 45 minutes each way for his last three years of high school so that he could attend The Collegiate School in suburban Richmond. Collegiate was a good fit for her son, Holt says. A Tale of Two Schools By Mark Beyreis The day was clear and bright. Clad in his familiar blue blazer, Emmett stood before the parents of the latest freshman class to come to the prestigious Virginia boarding school. Now in his early 60s, Emmett was no longer a young man, but he was in robust health. As headmaster, he annually delivered this address to the parents, an address which he closed the same way every year: "And remember. As you drive down this driveway," he said gesturing to the tree-lined driveway, "Don't look back." It was his way of telling parents that they must be strong if their sons were ever to get over the inevitable homesickness that would set in soon after they opened the bags their mothers had helped them pack. But it was also his way of telling the parents that they need not try to help him do his job. He did not require unsolicited advice, thank you. Emmett was, what I consider to be, an extraordinary leader. He was charming when he wanted to be, but his piercing blue eyes could strike fear into the hearts of young freshmen and faculty alike. Emmett liked to project a persona more concerned with production than people. And production for Emmett was the continuation of all that this 100-year-old boarding school stood for. He maintained tradition the way a foreman maintains production on an assembly line no variation, no interruptions, no questions. The role of headmaster in a boarding school with a healthy endowment and plenty of bricks and mortar is unlike any other job in today's economy. It is more akin to a feudal lord than a manager. The board and the parents are rarely willing to knock a good thing. As long as the money keeps rolling in and the beds stay filled, you're on your own. Emmett thrived in the job. He was guided by his supreme confidence in his own ability to discern right from wrong. He

Contact Us - Feb, 1999 Issue #56 Small Boarding Schools Association Annual Conference March 4 – 6, 1999 By: Jodi Tuttle , Roving Reporter This unique and extremely worthwhile conference was held at Tallulah Falls School in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. The Conference agenda was full of information useful to admission directors and boarding school personnel. Topics included common applications, recruitment, advisor/advisee systems and transitioning students from therapeutic programs to the more traditional boarding schools. Most people agreed that this is one of the best conferences they have attended in the whole year. What makes this conference so great is that the conference is casual, intimate, low key and filled with relevance for educational consultants and small boarding school personnel. The Small Boarding School Association began in 1987 with a few educators who gathered at Hoosac School in New York to talk about common concerns for schools with less than 200 boarding students and less than 250 total students. The idea was to have a place to gather where the cost of attendance for small schools could be affordable. In the beginning, attendees stayed in dorms vacated by the students over spring or winter break and all meals were served in the dining room. Nowadays, attendees stay in low cost hotels instead of dorms, but the essence of the conference has not changed.

The article includes a brief history of Blue Ridge School, several comments from Head of School Dr. David Bouton, and an enlightening story about a 2002 graduate Aaron Lentz (of Richmond). The story summarizes Lentz journey from his arrival on the St. George, Virginia, campus as a sophomore to his departure for The College of William & Mary following a triumphant senior year. Lentz admits in the article that it "took about half the year for me to say, 'I'm here, so I might as well make the best of it.' " The story accurately reports that by the end of that year, Lentz's grades already were up, which he credited to the small class sizes and outstanding student-teacher relationships. The article goes on to state that: "A common theme among boarding school proponents ... is the faculty-student relationship. Hartford Courant April 1, 2000 FORK UNION, Va. Military schools, with their square notions of crisp uniforms and strict discipline, were once as trendy as a buzz cut. In 1950, there were 160 of the institutions nationwide. Today, there are just 40, but their concept and their enrollment is making a comeback. Two new military schools are in the works, existing institutions report rising piles of applications and even the liberal mayor of Oakland, Calif., Jerry Brown, is supporting military-style education as a remedy for troubled schools in his city. "The discipline issue, the organizational skills that we teach, the core values of spirituality, honesty and integrity. ... Parents are not finding those kind of things in public schools," said John Jackson, a retired Air Force lieutenant general who serves as president of Fork Union Military Academy in central Virginia. Applications there are up 15 percent in the last year.
