Music HISTORY In 2000 BC, before the first history was recorded in writings, there had been already among people the legends and mythology about the origin of mankind and stories about the beginning of formation of Viet nation from HUNG VUONG. These are stories on HONG BANG dynasty, on offspring of dragon and fairy, bag of hundred eggs, eighteen kings of Hung Vuong dynasty, Son Tinh - Thuy Tinh's conflict, Thanh Giong's victory over An foreign aggressors, folk of betel and areca nuts, "banh chung banh day", watermelon ..... All these legends together can be regarded as a folk history comprising mythology characteristic as well as core of history in memory and tradition through many ages of people. Most of history of a nation of the world, with or without writing, is penetrated with treasure of folk and legends.
In 221 BC, Tan Thuy Hoang, King of Tan (China), invaded the land of the Viet tribes. Thuc Phan, the leader of the alliance of Au-Viet tribes was respected as the chief of the resistance war against the Tan enemy that later, in 208 BC, was forced to withdraw. With his imposing power, Thuc Phan nominated himself as King An Duong Vuong and founded Au Lac Nation with groups of Lac Viet and Au Viet tribes. In 179 BC, Trieu Da, King of Nam Viet (China), invaded Au Lac country. The resistance of An Duong Vuong failed soon after this invasion. As a result, the northern feudalist took turns dominating the country over the next seven centuries, establishing their harsh regime in the country and dividing the country into administrative regions and districts with unfamiliar names. However, the country’s name of Au Lac could not be erased from the people’s minds in their everyday life.

Exposing the "militia" mythology
Excerpt from the book 'Limits of Dissent.'
Aletheia Press, Amhurst, MA 1996
by Thomas Halpern and Brian Levin
Militias and the Constitution - Brian Levin The "well-Regulated militia" is the National Guard of each of the fifty states, not the armed civilian militias. The "state militia" in 1903 known as the Dick Act, the state militias are the National Guard of the fifty states. Thus, well-regulated militias, state militia and the National Guard are more or less synonymous terms because they refer to the same thing, though labeled differently to reflect the historical and legal contexts in which they are used.
The "unorganized militia" also was established by the Dick Act, you and I are subject by this statute to be called into military service if and when our political representatives find it necessary.
This federal statute, and similar statutes, do not give you and me the legal right to go out and form our own private armed militia.
The "sedentary militia" is another term used to refer to the unorganized militia that I just described.

Mythology, Folklore, and a little bit of Religion
Welcome! This page is essentially a massive list of links to sites about mythology, folklore, and religion. I've tried to sort them all by category, which has the advantage that it (theoretically, at any rate) makes it easier to find what you're looking for, but can lead to some pretty deeply nested subdivisions and also means that a lot of these pages do link to each other. There are links here to almost every relevant page I can find "almost" because there are a few things I don't have here: pages not in English, usenet sites, urban folklore and cyberlore sites, or any pages relating to "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys."
    Also, *please* mail me if
  • Any of my links have problems, are out of date, have moved, or whatever
  • You think I've mis-categorized something (always a possibility!)
  • You've got a site you'd like me to add to my list
  • I've got a link to your site and you wish I didn't
That's about it . . . happy mything!

"The reference of the metaphor in religious traditions is to something transcendent that is not literally any thing. If you think that the metaphor is itself the reference, it would be like going to a restaurant, asking for the menu, seeing beefsteak written there, and starting to eat the menu." The Question
What is the tale of the two lovers that were kept from each other by the Milky Way? They were stars
The Answer
The story of two lovers kept apart by the Milky Way is told in a number of Asian countries. It originates in China, but I'm also aware of versions in Japan and Vietnam. The stars are Vega (in the constellation Lyra) and Altair (in the constellation Aquila). I'm most familiar with the Vietnamese story, which is entitled "The Weaver Fairy and the Buffalo Boy". You can find it in a book entitled "Sky Legends of Vietnam" by Lynette Dyer Voung. Here is a brief summary of the story: The story explains the apparent coming together of these two stars during the summer months. It also explains (from some things I didn't include in the summary) the disappearance of crows in the summer, the summer rains, and the appearance of rainbows. I hope you'll look up the full story in Lynette Dyer Vuong's book, or in other collections of Chinese or Japanese star stories. Jim Lochner

The Vietnamese Zodiac By Barbara Cohen / Huu Ngoc Send a "Chuc Mung Nam Moi" card In Vietnam, the calendar was devised based on the regularly changing phases of the moon. Most Vietnamese, even city dwellers and overseas Vietnamese, have a lunar calendar in their homes to consult for festivals and auspicious dates. Because of the use of the lunar calendar, the actual days of the New Year vary from year to year. The equinoxes and solstices that marked the beginning of the European seasons were taken as the midpoint by the Asian calendar with the result that each Vietnamese season begins six weeks earlier than its European counterpart. Each year is "sponsored" sequentially by one of the twelve animals of the Vietnamese zodiac: the rat comes first, then the ox or buffalo, followed in order by the tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat or ram, monkey, cock, dog, and lastly, the pig. Of these animals one is mythical (the dragon) and four (rat, tiger, snake and monkey) are wild, shunning contact with humans. Seven are domesticated. Every twelve years, the sponsorship reverts to the same animal. The years 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 are dragon years.
