For myself, therefore, I desire to declare that the principle that will govern me in the high duty to which my country calls me is a strict adherence to the letter and spirit of the Constitution as it was designed by those who framed it.
    Martin Van Buren, 1837
At a White House Dinner a servant came rushing up to Van Buren and whispered, "The house is on fire!" Excusing himself, Van Buren went out to the kitchen and helped quench the blaze. On returning, he explained why he had left. When he finished, Henry Clay looked up at him, putting his hand on his heart, said earnestly: "I am doing all I can to get you out of this house, but believe me, I do not want to burn you out."

Martin Van Buren Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiabilityand his humble background. Of Dutch descent, he was born in 1782, the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, in Kinderhook, New York. As a young lawyer he became involved in New York politics. As leader of the "Albany Regency," an effective New York political organization, he shrewdly dispensed public offices and bounty in a fashion calculated to bring votes. Yet he faithfully fulfilled official duties, and in 1821 was elected to the United States Senate. By 1827 he had emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson. President Jackson rewarded Van Buren by appointing him Secretary of State. As the Cabinet Members appointed at John C. Calhoun's recommendation began to demonstrate only secondary loyalty to Jackson, Van Buren emerged as the President's most trusted adviser. Jackson referred to him as, "a true man with no guile."

The rift in the Cabinet became serious because of Jackson's differences with Calhoun, a Presidential aspirant. Van Buren suggested a way out of an eventual impasse: he and Secretary of War Eaton resigned, so that Calhoun men would also resign. Jackson appointed a new Cabinet, and sought again to reward Van Buren by appointing him Minister to Great Britain. Vice President Calhoun, as President of the Senate, cast the deciding vote against the appointmentand made a martyr of Van Buren.

Visiting Martin Van Buren's Grave
Here I am at President Van Buren's grave in Kinderhook Cemetery just outside the village of Kinderhook, New York . The date is September 11, 1991, and my wife and I are working our way up the Hudson valley hunting Dead Presidents. We reached the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site , which is at Lindenwald, Van Buren's understated home in Kinderhook, near its closing time. The house is situated on a great lawn, and we basked in the sun of an extremely nice day awaiting the beginning of the final scheduled house-tour of the day. The house seems only rarely visited; we were the only participants in our tour, and the tour that finished before us was given only to an elderly lady who had lived in Kinderhook all her life and was a friend of the tour guide, but who had only just now gotten around to visiting Lindenwald. Of all the government-run sites which I've visited in my travels to presidential haunts, Lindenwald was the most enjoyable. The National Park Service personnel there were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and our personal tour through the lovely home gave us the opportunity to ask many questions. We felt so little rushed that we almost seemed able to dawdle through the mansion, and although we knew that we were staying beyond closing time, the tour guide and guard didn't mind in the least, and they simply shrugged off our apologies for keeping them late. Lindenwald has a very attractive asymmetry about it, with a bell-tower, installed by the president's son during his father's lifetime, rising from the left side of the mansion. Another remarkable feature of the house is the great hall where Van Buren received his guests. The front door opens not into a room or foyer, but to a wide hall that reaches to the rear of the house; rooms of the house are to either side of the hall. A long dining table would be set up in the hall when dinner was offered by the long-widowed politician to large groups of his followers. The walls of the hall are adorned with the original wallpaper, which is not patterned, but hand-painted, making an impressive and entertaining mural that depicts a fox-hunt. The topography of hunt interacts with the architecture of the house itself, the stairways and corners making for obstacles for the pointing and chasing dogs.

    President
    Martin Van Buren
Served 1837-1841 Martin Van Buren was born December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York. His father owned a tavern, and when he was little, he listened to famous men such as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr argue politics when they often visited. His nickname, "Old Kinderhook," has been credited as the origination of the American expression "OK," coined at that time for the town he was born in. Van Buren married Hannah Hoes on February 21, 1807, and had four sons. He was also called the "Little Magician" because he was so good at making politicians with different opinions agree. Elected Jackson's Vice-President in 1832, Van Buren became the last sitting Vice-President for 156 years to win election as President. A Democrat, Van Buren's Vice President was Richard M. Johnson. During his term, many important inventions changed American life, including Morse's telegraph, Deere's steel plow, McCormick's mechanical reaper, and Goodyear's vulcanized rubber. Slavery was a growing issue during Van Buren's time. Van Buren died July 24, 1862.

Martin Van Buren - His Presidential Years
Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States and served from 1837 to 1841. In the election of 1836, Van Buren won easily with 170 electoral votes against 73 for Harrison, 26 for White, 14 for Webster and 11 for Mangum. In popular votes Van Buren received a total of 764,176 votes compared to 550,816 for Harrison, 146,107 for White and 41,201 for Webster. The Map below shows the election results of 1836. Click on map for enlargement.
Major Issues of the Election of 1836
Van Buren disagreed with Whig candidate William Henry Harrison's revenue-sharing scheme that would return federal surplus from the proceeds of federal lands directly back to the states.
Harrison was willing to revive the Bank of the United States if the economy got out of control, while Van Buren opposed the Bank in all circumstances.
While Harrison called for a number of internal improvements, while Van Buren only intended on federally funding projects that were truly national in scope.
Van Buren's major political opponents were:
    William Henry Harrison (Whig)
    Hugh Lawson White (Whig)
    Daniel Webster (Whig)
Vice President: Richard Mentor Johnson (1780-1850)
Martin Van Buren's expertise as a political strategist which earned him the name "little magician" was used to promote Andrew Jackson , but it was of no use to him in furthering his own career as President. The main problem was the economic depression that persisted throughout most of his administration. He was further hampered by his taste for the finer things in life, which caused his critics to portray him as a dandy, indifferent to the country's sufferings. He was dubbed " Martin Van Ruin " for these economic problems, even though they were already on the scene before he took office.

    A Master Politician's "Magical" Career
"It is said that he is a great magician," wrote Andrew Jackson. "I believe it, but his only wand is good common sense which he uses for the benefit of the country." A long series of elected and appointed posts afforded the "Little Magician" ample opportunity to practice his true craft: cool, competent diplomacy. A discreet, guarded man, Van Buren operated most effectively behind the scenes, where one observer noted, he "rowed to his object with muffled oars." Yet, in his later years Van Buren realized sadly that the wizardry had failed, that the political system he had helped to create would not prevent civil war. Scope:
The Van Buren Papers include his Autobiography (1854-1864), general correspondence (1787-1868), messages (1837-1838), a legal record book (1807-1813), and an estate record book (1862-1863). there are many gaps in his papers because Van Buren destroyed correspondence that he felt was of little value.

The papers are divided into seven series, arranged chronologically or alphabetically depending on the contents.
    Notes:
The Calendar of the Marin Van Buren Papers is a chronological listing of documents day by day, with a short description of each document. There is a name and subject index at the end of the list. The Library of Congress has not yet published an Index for the collection.
