http://www.tourismtunisia.com/culture/
A n ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, Tunisia , the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics , on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara.
This heritage, Tunisia's greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo . Most Museums are closed on Mondays, whereas many on-site archeological museums and ruins are open all week. An entrance fee is usually charged and a caretaker will often act as guide.

Tunisian Vacation/Holiday Resort Page
Welcome to the Tunisian Vacation/Holdiay Resort Page (a personal web page). Tunisia continues to become one of the more popular destinations for Europeans and Middle Easterners who are on holiday.
Its beautiful beaches, history, culture, and the friendliness of the Tunisian people have always enticed many to visit.
In recent years, the number of tourists have grown considerably (over 4 million last year). Dozens of 4 and 5 star hotels have been built with an additional 100,000 hotel beds being built over the next few years.
The increased night time attractions also adds to the appeal. The Tunisian government has selected a small number of companies to open Las Vegas style Casinos which also offer excellent restaurants and Cabarets.
This site will enable you to learn more about this beautiful country and what it has to offer holiday and vacation travelers from all over the world.
Additionally, I will also list possible investment areas (that is what attracted me to Tunisia originally). You are welcome to email me with URL's that discuss Tunisian investing: Tunisian Vacation/Holiday email
I have numerous links to other Tunisian general information, hotel, and tourism sites to make your information gathering that much easier.

Culture
The Berbers were the original inhabitants of Tunisia, but waves of immigration over the centuries have brought Phoenicians, Jews, Romans, Vandals and Arabs. There was a major influx of Spanish Muslims in the 17th century, and the Ottoman Turks have also added their bit to the great ethnic mix. Islam is the state religion. Although while there has been a definite resurgence of religious adherence, particularly among the young and unemployed, the country remains fairly liberal. A small Jewish community practices in Tunis and on the island of Jerba, and there are also about 20,000 Roman Catholics. Thanks largely to the efforts of the secular, socialist former president, Habib Bourguiba, conditions for women in Tunisia are better than just about anywhere in the Islamic world - to western eyes, at least. Bourguiba outlawed polygamy and divorce by renunciation, and also placed limits on the tradition of arranging marriages, setting a minimum marriage age of 17 for girls and giving them the right to refuse a proposed marriage. His calling the veil 'an odious rag' led to its present state of scarcity. Still, ancient traditions die hard, and women travellers are well advised to keep their upper arms and shoulders covered and to opt for long skirts or trousers. Men wearing shorts are considered to be in their underwear and can sometimes incite indignation as well. Public displays of affection are frowned upon in most parts of the country.

    INTRODUCTION
Tunisia, a melting-pot of different civilizations, has always had a rich cultural activity, as testified by its prestigious museums and cultural institutions and by the various international festivals held throughout the year. Sustained efforts have been deployed to promote the cultural sector. The Heritage Code grants companies important tax breaks to encourage investments in restoration and protection of archaeological monuments (e.g. Cathedral of Carthage;) promulgation of legal texts allows free importation of books and paper destined for cultural purposes and the exemption from customs duties of musical instruments.
    INSTITUTIONS
A whole strategy has been put in place to set up institutions serving as points of reference in the various domains of cultural activity. Among them, the National Dance Center of Borj El Baccouche, the House of Baron d'Erlanger converted into a Center for Arab and Mediterranean Music, and the Husseinite Museum (covering the period of the Beys) in the Palace of Ksar Said.
Other projects are in the process of completion, such as the Museum of Modern Art, located at the Palace of El Abdellia, and the National Cultural Center of Tunis. In addition, the International Cultural Center of Hammamet has been refurbished and transformed into the House of the Mediterranean, specializing mainly in theatrical arts. The institution of "Beit el Hikma" was converted into an Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in order to better contribute to the cultural and intellectual activity of Tunisia. The academy also welcomes distinguished scholars wishing to conduct research in various fields and serves as a meeting place for debates and exchanges between researchers, scholars and artists.
