"Proper" Tree Care?
Proper tree care is a mystery to some. Plant a tree and nature will take care of the rest, right? That may be true in some rural forests, but in your yard and in your community, trees need a special kind of care. Trees need to be protected from...people! Trees in our neighborhood contribute to the quality of our lives, and make our communities more livable. Urban trees clean our air, cool and shade our homes, and increase the value and attractiveness of our community. If your trees had the opportunity, would they move to your neighbor's yard? If so, here are some tips you need to know about how to make your own yard safe for trees. Learning about proper tree care can prevent you from becoming your tree's worst enemy.

64. Warm Fall And Yard Care
Stateline yard and Garden is a weekly horticulture and gardening column written by Bruce Spangenberg, Horticulture Educator, University of Illinois Extension
http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/stateline/991111.html
These articles are written to apply to the northeastern corner of Illinois. Problems and timing may not apply outside of this area.
Warm Fall and Yard Care
With the unusual warmth of this fall, it seems hard to believe winter is actually very close. While the warm weather may call for a few modifications, yard and garden preparation is still basically the same at this point as any other year. Probably the one noticeable change due to the warm days is some lawns may need an additional mowing, while in other years at this stage of November grass has completely stopped growing. If your lawn has put on some significant growth since the last mowing, it is to your advantage to mow it one last time. Lawns going into winter excessively high are more prone to snow mold disease and damage from voles. Noticed any dust as you are raking leaves off the lawn? Many areas are quite dry, as it has been several weeks since significant rains came to northern Illinois. Dry soils and mild temperatures are reasons to water evergreens as needed until the ground freezes. This will help prevent winter desiccation injury. If you have not already done so, think about protecting shrubs and small trees from rabbits and mice. Rake out leaves that have accumulated around the base of low growing evergreens to help reduce cover for mice that can gnaw away bark. Once the weather gets colder and snow falls, rabbits will look to tender shrubs for food. Put up poultry wire protection before the weather turns and the damage is done.

Need help with basics? Here are tips

BY DEBORAH RIDER ALLEN
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Apr 14, 2002
Warm weather and sunny days beckon gardeners to get outside and attend to dormant lawns and flower beds. But the experts say April is a bit too soon to jump in with planting and fertilizing. Take the time to do a little investigating and find out the right chores to do in the yard and garden this spring.
A greener lawn
Although many gardeners strive for a green lawn, springtime in Virginia is not the time to fertilize the lawn. "We do not recommend fertilizing in the spring," said Richard Nunnally, extension agent for the Virginia Cooperative Extension in Chesterfield County. The proper time to fertilize a lawn in Virginia is after Labor Day. Fertilizing in the spring will turn a lawn green, but it also causes top growth of the plant instead of root growth, making it less drought resistant. "It is risky to seed now because those little seeds have to become well established prior to our mid-June dry spell," said Charlie Curry, senior extension agent for the Extension office in Henrico. He recommends that when seeding in small bare patches, some light cultivation (aeration or dethatching) is necessary for good soil-to-seed contact. Curry advises people to get out and pick up all the fall and winter debris and check the lawn mower. "Sharpen the lawn mower blade and set the height of cut by measuring it to a hard surface," he said. "It should be two and a half to three inches high."

How to Protect Trees In Your Yard Trees in urban areas are susceptible to stresses such as air pollution, lack of water due to pavement and asphalt, and poor soils, which lack the replenishing nutrients from the fallen leaves and trees of the forest floor. Compacted clay soils prevent roots from growing deep in the ground, and soils compacted by human activity can suffocate the roots of trees. Environmental stresses, just like with us humans, make trees more susceptible to disease and injury. The best way to protect trees in your care is regular maintenance, especially mulching. During times of drought, young trees may need additional watering. Tree roots need non-compacted soils and room to spread, and certain types of ground cover are preferable underneath trees. For advice on the proper care of your trees contact your county extension agent a certified arborist , or Trees Atlanta . A helpful list of references and phone numbers including your county extension agent and local arborists is located on the last pages of this booklet. Here are a few tips to keep your trees healthy:
  • Most important for tree health is mulching. Add 3-4 inches of hardwood mulch under the entire canopy of a tree (if possible), especially in areas where people frequently walk or park.

    Curb Pollen's Power
Goldenrod, which blooms from late summer through October, has an extremely high pollen count and should be avoided by gardeners who suffer from allergies.
Gardening presents significant challenges to those who suffer from allergies and hay fever. But that's all they arechallengesnot insurmountable obstacles. Pollen and mold are formidable enemies. Nearly invisible, these ubiquitous air pollutants nonetheless account for most hay fever misery: itchy eyes, runny nose, plugged ears, and scratchy, irritated throat. Doctors estimate that 50 million American express hay fever symptoms, nearly a third of whom suffer from the most extreme form of hay feverasthma. On a checklist of hobbies not to pursue if you suffer from hay fever, gardening would probably make the top 10. But if plants are your passion, it's worth trying to reconcile the two. Combined with medically based allergy treatments, such as medication and shots, allergy-free gardening techniques can enable those with moderate hay fever symptoms to enjoy their favorite pastime. Or enjoy it more.

    http://csf.colorado.edu/perma/fruit_tree.html
Working at a permaculture (permanent + culture) institute, many people ask me, "How do I start a permaculture on my own?" The first step, I tell them, is to do something close to home, something that will not take much time nor require much effort, something that will easily slip into your routine yet be a constant reminder and reward of your landscape's abundance. Start in an area which you and others will pass by often so that you will be witness to the fruits of your labor - somewhere between your car and your front door. Start by planting a fruit tree in your front yard! For less than an hour of work a fruit tree will reward you year after year with its many yields; any combination of fruits, nuts, syrup, shade, medicines, fuel, fodder, and/or wildlife habitat. One mulberry tree alone can attract so many birds that bird watchers will never want to leave home. You will have also completed your first lesson in permaculture. Planting a fruit tree in your front yard illustrates two important principles of design: that we gain the highest yield possible for our effort, and that each component in our landscape has several functions. A fruit tree will give you the biggest bang for your buck, and that is what permaculture is all about! A front yard that produces fruit also helps to create community. I love the wonder I see on my next door neighbor's face, Zachary, age 12, as he explores the plum and pear trees I planted in my family's front yard in Houston. He will not grow up unsure of where fruit comes from and will quickly learn the difference between store-bought and locally grown foods. We have many other neighbors who stop to visit with my mother because they are drawn by our trees producing fruit. For my grandmother, whom I grew up with, the same trees offer a beautiful array of blossoms in the spring, and are a reminder of the food she grew in her family's victory garden after World War II.
