The Basics

  • The Sydney Olympics will feature three disciplines of gymnastics - artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. Trampoline gymnastics makes its Olympic debut in 2000. The rhythmic gym-nastics competition is limited to women.
Trampoline
The trampoline discipline will feature both men's and women's events with individual competition only.
Rhymthic In the rhythmic compe-tition, female gymnasts perform routines of 75 seconds to 90 seconds in length. They are judged on degree of difficulty, artistic impression and execution. Artistic The artistic discipline includes three types of competition. In team competition and all-round individual competition, gymnasts perform on each apparatus and their scores for each are combined. In individual competition, athletes compete on a single apparatus. 1996 Medal winners Individual all-round

Karavaeva's appeared to be floating as she flew through the air. Oxana Tsyhuleva of Ukraine took the silver and Karen Cockburn of Canada won the bronze. ``It's an adrenaline rush. I'm actually afraid of heights, which is really funny,'' Cockburn said. ``But it's a different feeling on the trampoline.'' Karavaeva, 25, has been winning world championships since 1994. She won the individual event at the World Cup in Vienna this year, when she also finished second in the synchronized event. • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

    Like triathlon and Tae-Kwon-Do, the trampoline event in Sydney will be the first in Olympic history. Like diving, style is just as important as the substance of the routine. Artistry and grace have as much part to play as mastering the technicalities. Each routine must display 10 recognised skills, which include:
    • One landing on either the front or the back of the body;
    • A single or a double somersault, or something in between containing a 540-degree twist at least;
    • A forward or a backward somersault;
    • A forward or a backward somersault, including at least a full twist.
    Seven judges score a trampoline routine. Five of them rate how well the different moves were performed during the routine while two rate the degree of difficulty of the different skills performed. Points are awarded for the performances and then adjusted according to the degree of difficulty involved.

    New sports make rousing debuts

    SYDNEY (October 1, 2000 7:02 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Splishity-splash. Boing Boing Boing. Step two, three, kick. Zzzzzap. Newcomers to the Olympic sporting family sure made a lot of noise at Sydney. Synchronized diving, trampoline, taekwondo and triathlon joined the ever-expanding circle of Olympic events at the Games of the 27th Olympiad, which concluded here Sunday, and each was a well-received debutant. Divers enjoyed having some company in the spotlight atop the 10m platform and 3m springboard, performing their flips and twists in side-by-side routines. "I'm very happy synchronized diving was introduced," said Russian diving star Dmitry Sautin. "It's very handsome and very pleasant to look at." Sautin and partner Igor Lukashin captured men's platform gold. Sautin also took silver in the springboard duet event plus a silver and a bronze in the traditional solo events. The four new diving events helped increase China's haul to a unprecedented five golds from the diving well and gave a chance for solo competitors to work together for the first time as duos in quest of gold.
