Tonga, before Europeans arrived, was one of the most powerful islands in the region and at times its empire stretched across Samoa, Futuna, Uvea (Wallis), Rotuma, Niue and parts of Fiji. Testimony to these powerful times are evident along the north-eastern coast of Tongatapu where the powerful kings (Tui) resided. This archaeologically rich area offers the largest terraced tombs ( langi ) in the South Pacific at the present day village of Lapaha (formerly known as Mua) and the hugely impressive trilithon of Ha'amonga 'A Maui, about five miles further along the north point. This trilithon is a massive 12-ton stone archway made from three single limestone slabs. How they got there and what it was used for is uncertain but two of the more creditable theories are a gateway to the Royal Gardens or a shrine for observing the seasons. Other similar but smaller structures can be found within the Kingdom's ancient empire.
Captain Cook landed very close to the ancient capital of Mua in 1777 and visited the then King of Tonga. A plaque marks the place of his first footsteps, the first of any European.

"Welcome to the Royal Kingdom of Tonga !" To all visitors to our shores we say: "Malo e lelei - Warm welcome to the Friendly Islands." The South Pacific island Kingdom of Tonga is located in Western Polynesia. Its nearest neighbor is Fiji to the west and the Samoas to the north. Western Polynesia includes the islands of Tonga, Samoa, Niue, Tuvala and Tokelau. Tonga is one of the world's few remaining constitutional monarchies. It is the only South Pacific country never to have been colonized by a foreign power. Tonga is ruled by His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. The country preserves its ancient traditions alongside modern policies designed to stimulate economic development. A message from H.R.H. Culture
Dance in Tonga has traditionally been an important art form, turning oral histories and folk tales into a visual form praising and honouring gods, chiefs, places and people. Weaving with the leaves of the pandanus palm is at its zenith as an art form in Tonga, and baskets and intricately worked mats produced by a variety of means are among the most beautiful in the Pacific. A reasonable body of literature has been produced in or about the archipelago in spite of its tiny size, and some of it goes beyond oral histories and folk tales. The earliest accounts are by castaway Will Mariner and Captain Bligh after he lost command of his ship. There are also several more recent collections of poetry and prose by contemporary writers. The extended family is the basic social unit on Tonga, and it serves as a mini welfare state, with wealth, food and goods shared equally among all members. The concept of the communal extended family is so fundamental in Tongan life that parents have no real sense of 'possession' of their children, who are frequently shifted from one household to another, and may have several places to call home as a result. Gifts are given as a matter of course to new friends and even foreigners, so it pays to have a few tins of corned beef or souvenirs from home to give away so you can join in. These customs were already deeply ingrained by the time the missionaries arrived, and from Ha'apai, where the Wesleyans first started gathering souls, Christianity took a strong hold throughout the archipelago, wiping out most indigenous spiritual beliefs in its wake. Today the Mormons are spreading their influence and building churches throughout the islands.

http://emuseum.mnsu.edu/cultural/oldworld/pacific/tonganculture.html
Tongan Culture
Tonga is located in the beautiful waters of the South Pacific. It is set between New Zealand and Australia. Like all other cultures, the cultural identity of the Tongan is constructed and reconstructed. Tradition and culture is invented and reinvented in response to the different yet continuous encounters with other cultures. Migrants do not build their own ethnic identity from scratch; they bring in their own version of it. It then evolves to fit their new home. As is such the case in the Tongan culture. Many migrants, coming in and leaving, bring or leave their ideas of culture. So there is not really a set culture in Tonga, but a variety. There is still the influence of the old ways or Anga Fakatonga. Anga Fakatonga is a fluid, manipulable, yet powerful concept. It is translated to mean culture or tradition. It is said to hold all that is Tongan in values and behavior. The main points of Anga Fakatonga that have stayed strong throughout the generations are song, dance, gender roles and the most central point is respect. Although Anga Fakatonga is still present, the daily life of the Tongans revolves primarily around church. There are both morning and afternoon services on Sundays, both lasting up to two hours. There is a break between the services. Food and beverages are supplied and the people have a time to socialize. There is also a service on Wednesday along with bible study and choir practice. On Fridays, there is a youth group for the adolescents. The church is not simply a place for worship but a place for social interactions. Migrant and natives come together to discuss the Tongan Way.

The internet centre is a good thing, it will create interest and help a lot, especially young children, growing up knowing about computers. Even playing games will give them much interest, as they learn to be confident. We elders get the chance of trying to do something, even if you have no job, you can get knowledge and better job opportunities. I come to the ITC whenever I can, when I am in Binga. I did a computer course in bulawayo in 1996, but I have now forgotten, so I am trying to re-learn many things. The people here have helped me very much. I want such a kind of job, and now I can get it. I have not yet gone onto the internet or emailing. Although it is a distance from Samende to here, it is still better than the long journey to Bulawayo, which is expensive. I think it is affordable at $50 per hour, yes. Tonga culture may become recognised through this internet.

In 1957, shortly before the flooding, he was invited to the Zambezi Valley by the Livingstone Museum in Zambia and commissioned by them to record on analogue tape examples of what were believed would become the last remaining vestiges of local culture before it vanished forever.
ON SALVAGE
The Livingstone Museum believed that Tonga culture would be utterly destroyed because of the forced removal of everyone from the valley to make way for the building of Kariba dam. Fortunately they were proved wrong. In fact, strangely enough, the enforced move provided the Tonga with a small jewel. Shortly before the flooding, the ethnomusicologist, Hugh Tracey, was invited to the valley by the Livingstone Museum to record on tape examples of what were believed would become the last remaining vestiges of Tonga culture before it vanished for ever. He recorded over eighty examples of Tonga music. Previously these recordings were unavailable to the culture that produced them because very few of the Tonga had access to gramaphones, tape recorders, CD players or radios. Now, through the International Library of African Music (ILAM) website in South Africa and the newly established internet connection in Binga, this historical legacy, which was transferred from analogue tape to vinyl record and recently digitalised, has the potential to be reclaimed by the people of the Zambezi Valley.

Guide
Cook Islanders are Polynesian people, arriving in their homeland around 800 AD from neighbouring Polynesian islands. The people are broadly divided into two groups - those from the north speaking Pukapukan whose descendents came from Samoa and Tonga, and those from the south speaking Rarotongan whose descendants came from The Society Islands and Marquesas to the east. The indigenous people, commonly known as Cook Island Maoris, also share their Polynesian ancestry with New Zealand Maoris (New Zealand was settled by Cook Islanders) and Hawaiians. Marae were the ancient meeting places for the pre-European Maoris. These stone structures have mostly been neglected (even the most sacred marae on Rarotonga is littered), but can still be seen entangled in the bush.
more about Cook Island history

Cook Island society is based on an association to a village and its chief. Chiefly titles, ariki , and land rights are passed through both the male and female lineage but to the discretion of the senior family member. Therefore, a disgraced family member may be given no land at all, whilst the favoured one will often win the prized family land. Land cannot be bought or sold and as most islanders want land on Rarotonga, it is common for those on the outer islands without land rights on Rarotonga to try to marry someone who does have land rights on Rarotonga.
