Press Release
D isneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture from the moment it opened on July 17, 1955. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe, their architectural strategies have spread far beyond the park enclosures. Disney's style has suggested a new approach to the "real-world" architecture of the shopping mall and the resort, and has subtly changed public expectations of the cityscape. As a result, Disneyland has been a lasting subject of controversy and debate. Celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of the consumer society, "Disneyland" has become a watchword in the cultural battleground between "high" and "low," a metaphor for America's entertainment culture, and a synonym for what trivializes or sentimentalizes the world around us.
This exhibition casts a fresh eye on critical aspects of modern America's architectural cultureits promises, its roots and offshoots, and its unparalleled worldwide impact. Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and curated by Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks presents 350 unique drawings, models, paintings, and plans for the parks and their attractions from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering.

This is a wonderful book for those Disney fans who want to know more about the history of the Disney Theme Parks. There are a lot interesting pictures; some never even seen. Very well detailed and interesting reading. All of those 'curious-types' should buy this book! Engaging Thoughts about Disney Many books on Disney's art and achitecture try to convey its appeal primarily through the visual. Other books, particularly those that whole-heartedly criticize Disney, try to ignore the appeal of Disney altogether. This book attempts to integrate the visual evidence (photos, concept art) with academic writing on Disney (Karal Ann Marling, Erika Doss, Greil Marcus, etc.). Together, these aspects make for a solid inquiry as to the appeal of Disney's architecture.

edited by Karal Ann Marling Disney theme parks have been seen as a harbinger of the culture of the shopping mall, a symbol of America in the entertainment industry, and the epitome of everything fanciful or gaudy in our modern, consumer-driven society. This fascinating volume explores popular and critical responses to the architecture of Disney parks from their inception in 1955 to today. Drawing upon a wealth of plans, posters, models, drawings, and paintings created by Walt Disney Corporation's "Imagineering" department, Designing Disney's Theme Parks
is the first book to examine the influence of Disneyland on our built environment and to address the complex issues arising from the Disney Corporation's current project to create an ideal city combining recreated historical architecture and progressive technology. This book provides a unique perspective on one of the great postwar American icons.

My fiance and I are having a grand time looking for the bloopers cited for the various films (e.g., Gaston's disappearing and reappearing musket in "Beauty and the Beast"). I especially enjoyed seeing what original story lines were planned for each feature, and learning what scenes were removed because they didn't work. If you are a fan of Disney's work, you will doubtless enjoy learning how the films might have been different. Even some of the rides at Disneyland have changed in concept from their initial development due to changes in films. A very entertaining read indeed.

Reviewer: A reader from Boulder, CO
It's too bad that so many people who reviewed the book here didn't seem to understand what they were buying and then were disappointed. It's a great book! I was particularly enthralled by the chapters by Greil Marcus and Erika Doss but who wouldn't be? Their work always combines the everyday and the academic in such fluid and fun ways. It's clear from the reviews that the folks who rated this 1 or 2 stars simply didn't understand what they were looking at!
