Public Health
The Beaumont Public Health Department is continuing its transition into the new millennium. The department has begun to assess the needs of the community as it relates to public health. Community-based activities are becoming the major focus of the department. Recognizing the new role that must be established to ensure a healthy community, the department created partnerships with various public and private entities. The department serves as a training site for students at Lamar University acquiring Bachelor degrees in nursing, nutrition and health promotion, also providing preceptorships for graduate nursing, biology and nutrition students.
ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES Administrative Services provides guidance and direction to the various divisions of the department through the monitoring of established goals and objectives. The section implements corrective action when deemed necessary. Additionally, data collection and analysis are integral parts of its role.
PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMS Public health programs with the Health Department provide a variety of services, including communicable disease controls, which encompasses the investigation and surveillance of infectious diseases including tuberculosis, sexually-transmitted and vaccine-preventable diseases and other reportable diseases. Immunization of residents is also a part of communicable disease control and is done in a variety of settings: health fairs, public schools, day care centers and community sites such as one of the Police Department's substations.

Phone: (512) 463-0127 Sen. Lucio files Texas Schoolchildrens Nutrition and Health Act Sets guidelines for vending machines in public schools AUSTIN, TXToday state Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) announced the filing of his Texas Schoolchildrens Nutrition and Health Act, Senate Bill 474, at a press conference in Austin aimed at eliminating obesity and poor nutritional habits among public school children through a series of innovative provisions. State Rep. Jaime Capelo (D-Corpus Christi), who has made improving nutrition and health in public schools one of his main priorities, has agreed to sponsor the bill in the House. Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs, a staunch advocate of promoting better eating habits among children, worked closely with Sen. Lucio to develop a sound and comprehensive proposal. All of us as parents are concerned about the health and welfare of our children, and we think this is a giant step in creating the environment which will help them adopt healthier lifestyles, said Sen. Lucio. If were willing to spend money to maintain the life of our automobiles, why shouldnt we spend a little more on our kids so they live longer and healthier lives? Obesity is a growing epidemic in Texas and it contributes to serious long-term health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. I have previously filed legislation seeking to establish good public policy regarding the food that is available to our school children. In partnership with Sen. Lucio, Commissioner Combs, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the Texas Department of Health (TDH), the Texas Dietetic Association and the Texas School Food Service Association, we will have better nutrition in our schools and better health for our school children. The future of Texas economy is directly tied to the health of our children, said Rep. Capelo, chairman of the Public Health Committee.

    Nutrition/Dietetics Description
A major in nutrition provides students with a strong foundation in biology, biochemistry, and physiology as well as the sociological and psychological dimensions of human nutrition. Undergraduate training in nutrition can lead to careers in industry, hospitals, schools, colleges, government agencies, and clinics. Students are also prepared for entry-level research positions in the biomedical and nutritional biochemistry fields. A nutrition degree also can provide a sound background for those intending to go to graduate school in any of the life sciences or the health professions. Dietetics is appropriate for students seeking careers as clinical dietitians, nutritionists, health educators, and consultants in food and nutrition. People in dietetics engage in such activities as assessing patients’ nutritional needs, developing and implementing nutritional programs and evaluating patients’ progress. Most positions are available in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and health maintenance programs.
