Proceedings of the Horticulture Program Retreat, 1995 Directions for the Year 2000
The Texas Horticulture Program has identified six trends that will impact its future course, as its members continue to serve the people of Texas in teaching, research and extension roles. Strategies to address these trends have been identified.
Horticulture and Funding for the Future
The Texas Horticulture Program is operating against a backdrop of changing funds to support teaching, research, and extension programs. Although short term remedies may be effective, a long term strategy is required to reverse this TREND. The following strategies have been identified as possible means of enhancing funding opportunities:
  • recruit additional undergraduate students;
  • implement fee-based programming for extension educational programs;
  • insure that teaching, research, and extension programs are relevant to emerging issues and trends;
  • shift programs, where feasible, to address emerging issues and trends;
  • seek endowments, and industry support through commodity associations and partnerships;
  • develop opportunities for funding through specific industry related projects;

People who come from communities where there are not enough health care providers are more likely to work in health work force shortage areas upon completion of their health professional education. So, we focus our activities on underserved populations. In 2001-2002 East Texas AHEC provided health careers information to 47,177 people.

    What is ENP?

    For more than 30 years, the Expanded Nutrition Program (ENP), part of the federally-funded Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) , has helped Texas youth and families with young children develop healthy eating and lifestyle practices. This Texas Cooperative Extension program (in cooperation with Family and Consumer Sciences ) delivers research-based information and education in the home, classroom, and community group settings to help Texans, with limited resources, make better nutrition and health decisions. The results are strong, nurturing families; healthy children; positive youth development; and savings in food and healthcare costs. What are the objectives of ENP?

    Weaver Honored by Texas Dietetic Association Sara Weaver '91, Director of Dietetics at the Student Health Center of the University of Texas at Austin, was recently named the "Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year" by the Texas Dietetic Association. The award recognizes the professional excellence and activities of dietitians in the American Dietetic Association. Each year, the Texas Dietetic Association selects and honors five members for the award. Sara was selected for her: - active participation with the American Dietetic Association at the national, state, and district level; - demonstrated concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status; - demonstrated leadership in legislation, education, clinical dietetics, public relations and community nutrition; - outstanding employment contributions and achievements.
    Alumni at Work ADA President Ronni Chernoff '67 When you suddenly find yourself president of a 70,000-member national organization like the American Dietetics Association-and spending more and more time on the road because of it-an understanding employer is a must. "They've been very generous," says Ronni Chernoff of her bosses at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. "I think I've had more than 200 flights this year. Someone from Delta told me I've been on a plane every other day."
