Texas Geography Source: The Handbook of Texas Online BOUNDARIES In the middle of the twentieth century the boundaries of Texas were 2,845.3 miles long, counting the great arc of the Gulf Coast line and only the larger river bends. If the smaller meanderings of the rivers and the tidewater coast line were followed, the boundary was 4,137 miles long and enclosed 263,644 square miles of land and 3,695 square miles of water surface. The location of Texas boundaries has been the subject of international and interstate conflict resulting in treaties, litigation, and commissions from 1736 to the present. Controversy over details continues, as the tidelands controversy and the Chamizal disputeq illustrate. In 1995 the state legislature authorized a Red River Boundary Commission to fix the boundary between Oklahoma and Texas, where the still-shifting Red River has frequently changed course and muddied the issue for two centuries. In 1852 Randolph B. Marcy discovered that there were two main branches of the Red River lying between the Melish line and the 100th meridian. The supposedly correct meridian was surveyed in 1860, the same year that the Texas legislature decreed Greer County. Because of the Civil War and Reconstruction, Greer County was not organized until 1886 and was in process of being settled when the United States land commissioner protested the Texas claim to the land north of the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The controversy went to the United States Supreme Court, which ruled on March 16, 1896, that the Texas boundary was the south or Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River and the astronomical 100th meridian.

Texas is roughly spade shaped. The vast expanse of the state contains great regional differences (the distance from Beaumont to El Paso is greater than that from New York to Chicago).
East Texas
Beaumont and Port Arthur are surrounded by rice fields. The inland pines still supply a lumbering industry; Huntsville Lufkin , and Nacogdoches are important lumber towns. The real wealth of East Texas, however, comes from its immense, rich oil fields. Longview is an oil center, and Tyler is the headquarters of the East Texas Oil Field. Oil is also the economic linchpin of Beaumont and Port Arthur and the basis for much of the heavy industry that crowds the Gulf Coast.

Synopsis:
Learn the basic facts about Texas geography, history, and culture with this program as a resource. This program is designed to meet the state standards.
Wow, I love this program! As educational software goes, it just doesn't get any simpler than this. With Microsoft Internet Explorer already installed on my computer, all I had to do was insert the SVEmedia disk, and we were ready to go.
The program looks and runs exactly as a web page no new skills to learn, no instructions necessary. It opens with an initial multiple-choice quiz, which gives the student an idea of how much she already
knows. When the quiz is done, a summary of the results is shown.
Example:
Score 65% 17 questions 14 answered 3 unanswered 11 correct 10:00 recommended time 02:54 time taken Correct answers are in bold The answers you chose remain clicked. Answer = Incorrect Educational Value: Teachers and parents have options to print scores, to create study worksheets, vocabulary lists, etc., from the program (see below.) They can also create a custom presentation by putting video segments and quizzes together in any order, which can be saved with unique names for specific classes and individual students.

Geography The First People Spanish Exploration French Exploration Immigration Colonization People Revolution The Republic Civil War Bound for Texas: Geography Texas has one of the most distinct and recognizable shape of all the states in the U.S.. With its 267,339 square miles of territory, extending from the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle to the Gulf of Mexico, Texas is, except for Alaska, the largest state in the Union. One can travel eight hundred miles in a straight line within its borders. This large area is made up of three major physical divisions: the Atlantic-Coastal plain, the Great Plains of Central North America, and the Rocky Mountain system. This fact that these areas join within the state gives the region a variety and contrast in topography, climate, and resources. Along with many streams, bayous, and creeks, there are also thirteen major rivers in Texas. Three rivers make up parts of the boundary of Texas. The Sabine (east), Red (north), and Rio Grande (south). The Trinity, Neches, and San Jacinto are located in East Texas. The Brazos and Colorado cut across the High Plains region. The Nueces, San Antonio, Guadalupe, and Lavaca flow eastward from Central Texas. The Canadian River is an unusual Texas river, in that it flows northeast across the Panhandle, emptying into the Arkansas River.
