Part of the United States Newspaper Program, a national effort to locate, catalog, preserve on microfilm, and make accessible, newspapers published in the United States from the earliest colonial days to the present. Site includes information about American newspapers held in tennessee libraries.

The Tennessee Newspaper Project (TNP) is part of the United States Newspaper Program, a national effort to locate, catalog, preserve on microfilm, and make accessible, newspapers published in the United States from the earliest colonial days to the present. Grant funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and technical support is provided by the Library of Congress. Tennessee's project is based in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee Libraries.
THE PROJECT DOES NOT HAVE ANY NEWSPAPERS. IT MAINTAINS A DATABASE (link below) OF INFORMATION OF AMERICAN NEWSPAPER HOLDINGS IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE AND HAS ACCESS TO INFORMATION ON THE HOLDINGS IN LIBRARIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. Some papers can be borrowed through interlibrary loan; contact your local interlibrary loan department or the holdings institution listed in the database here for more information on accessing a newspaper.

APPPOINTMENT RANK: Assistant or Associate Professor SALARY: $40,000 minimum AVAILABLE: December 3, 2002 The Metadata Librarian provides leadership for the University of Tennessee Libraries on all metadata issues, coordinates with constituencies inside and outside the libraries on these issues, is the resident authority for metadata standards, and helps establish and enforce metadata policies for the libraries. The Metadata Librarian reports to the Head of Technical Services and Digital Access and is a member of the Cataloging Unit of that department. The librarian is a member of the Digital Library Center's Steering Committee, which selects the digital projects with which the libraries are involved, and works closely with the Steering Committee and the Digital Initiatives Librarian (based in the Systems office) in the completion of chosen projects. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an ALA accredited program. Demonstrated familiarity and experience with integrated library systems and metadata schema such as MARC, TEI, EAD, DC or OAI. Knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with several different constituencies. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Academic library experience and experience in training are strongly preferred. Familiarity with related XML technology such as XSL or XLINK and/or administrative metadata solutions such as METS is preferred. Familiarity with relational database structure is also preferred.

of the
Tennessee Advisory Council on Libraries
January 14, 1999
The Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) will provide access to a wide selection of electronic databases for all libraries serving the citizens of the state of Tennessee. These include the public library system, as well as all public and private school, academic, and special libraries in the state. The TEL is made up of four integrated components: (1) subscriptions to commercial online products, (2) organizational and technical support for start-up and ongoing services, (3) computing storage capacity, and (4) training for Tennessee librarians and library users. The Tennessee Electronic Library will be funded by the state, taking advantage of funds available from LSTA, and potential funding such as that possible through the Gates Foundation. The TEL will be administered by the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Outsourcing may be considered if appropriate. (1) Subscriptions:
  • A Core Database Access Package will provide subscriptions to a variety of commercial full-text and image databases for all Tennessee libraries. Contents of a possible Core Package and its estimated annual cost:
