History
Team handball is very popular in much of the world, but little known in North America. Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena , the Danish handbold , and the German Torball All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden.

Olympic History: Team Handball
Team handball originated in Europe in the 1920s and has yet to catch on in the United States. Most describe the sport as a cross between basketball, hockey, soccer and water polo. Men's team handball made its Olympic debut at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and the women were added at the 1976 Games in Montreal. The United States has never enjoyed much success in the sport, drawn from the fact neither the men nor women's teams qualified for the Sydney Games. The U.S. women finished eighth at the Atlanta Games in 1996, while the men took ninth.

    History
Team handball was on the Olympic program at Berlin in 1936, as an outdoor sport with 11 players per team. Then it disappeared until 1952, when it was a demonstration sport. In 1972, the indoor version, which has seven players a team, became a men's Olympic sport. The women's sport was added in 1976. Teams are divided into two pools to play round robin tournaments, with the top four teams from each pool advancing into a single elimination medal round. The score shown is the final score of the gold medal game. From 1976 until 1988, women's medals were decided by a round robin tournament only. For those years, the won-lost record of the gold medal team is shown. Top of page

    What is Handball?
Handball is a popular, spectacular, dynamic and exciting sport that requires teamwork, speed and athleticism, teamwork, patience and finesse, teamwork, strength and power, teamwork, flamboyance and individual skills, teamwork, stamina and fitness and, above all, teamwork. The game is played over 140 nations and by over 15 million participants around the world and it is a wonderful mixture of soccer, basketball and a few water polo tactics thrown in (that'll get your imagination going). Handball is one of the most popular sport in Europe (after soccer) and is one of the fastest growing sports in Northern Asia and Africa. In the Americas it is becoming organised with national and continental championships and in Oceania it is on the cusp of taking off. The sport is sometimes known as Olympic Handball or Team Handball in North America to distinguish it from Court Handball, which is played on a squash court with rules similar to squash and played with gloved hands instead of squash raquets. Handball comes in a variety of guises from the now rarely played Field (Outdoor) Handball which was played on a soccer sized field with soccer-sized goals, to the now popular

Schelenz also borrowed from basketball, which was just becoming popular in Germany, to allow dribbling as a means of advancing the ball.
By 1925, the game had become fairly popular in other European countries. The International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF) was established in 1928; handball was a demonstration sport at the Olympics that year and again in 1932.

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

TEAM HANDBALL STUDY GUIDE Team Handball happens to be the fastest and most exciting sport in the world. It is a combination of basketball, soccer, hockey and lacrosse, and has been described as water polo played on land. The court is 40x20 m (two basketball courts) and features 2x3m goals at each end. Each Goal is surrounded by a 6m goal area (2 6m radius arcs with (center = goal post) joined by a tangent in the middle. Another arc, 9m from the posts, lies outside the goal line. This is the free throw line and it is usually dashed. A 1m long penalty throw line lies 7m in front of the goals. There is also a halfway line with a center dot for the restart. The ball used in team handball is 23 inches in circumference, and weighs about 16 ounces. The ball-playing rules are in 3's. 3 steps with the ball (a full three steps too, landing after catching the ball is step 0), 3 seconds holding the ball, and in class we had a limit of 3 dribbles. The goal keeper is the only player allowed in the goal area (6m semi-circle). (The goal area includes the line (5cm wide) so you can't contact any part of the 6m line or inside it.) They are also the only player allowed to touch the ball with their feet (below the knees), but only to save a goal, not to direct it out of the goal or to control the ball when it is not being shot at goal. The attackers may shoot from in the air above the goal area but must shoot before landing. A defender (or an attacker can not travel through the goal area in order to get an advantage at another spot, (no short cuts). Casual entry into the goal area is OK. The rule only applies if you are seen to gain some advantage by entry into the goal area.

TEAM HANDBALL - Olympic Sport A Similar Game Called Harpaston
Based on the basic elements of running, jumping and throwing the same elements of track and field it's not surprising that team handball has number ancient ancestors. Throwing-and-catching games are described by Homer in the "The Odyssey" and depicted in ancient Mexican art, and a game called Harpaston was apparently popular in ancient Rome. Europe, particularly Germany and the Scandinavian countries, was the crucible for the game, as we know it today. By the time the rules became instituted early in the 20th century, team handball would be a composite of several other popular sports, with rules similar to soccer (albeit without the kicking); positional play, scoring strategies and passing patterns resembling water polo; and ball movement and airborne acrobatics right out of basketball. All that with the intensity, speed and physical contact with hockey. An outdoor version of team handball also known as field ball played with 11 players a side made a false start at the Olympics with an appearance at the 1936 Berlin Games, with the Germans pleasing Hitler by winning the gold. It was dropped from the Olympic roster until 1972, by which time the 11-player outdoor game had been replaced by the seven-player indoor sport developed in Scandinavia. A women's Olympic tournament was added in 1976.
