... Tasmania Online If you thought that the Tasmanian Devil existed only in Bugs Bunny cartoons, think again. The Tasmanian Devil is a common marsupial found only in Tasmania. It is nocturnal and was named by early European settlers because of its eerie growl, which starts as a kind of whistle and ends in a bark. Devils have a body length of approximately 2 feet (60cm), and are known for their ferocity and foul tempers. They generally eat other small mammals and reptiles, as well as scavenging on dead animals of all kinds. Tasmanian Devils, 4.09Mb QuickTime movie Tasmanian Devils have some of the strongest jaws out of any animal, and usually eat the entirety of their prey. One time a family of Devils were found to have eaten a horse and left only the skull and tail. When feeding on roadkill, Devils generally eat everything including bones, fur and feet. Devils live for about seven years in their natural habitat of dry bush and scrub land. They were originally considered pests by farmers but are now appreciated for their ability in keeping down the numbers of crop-eaters such as mice. They are rarely seen because of their nocturnal nature, but tame Devils (can be touched) called Fie and Fum live at the Talune Wildlife Park. For those with hardy stomachs, Devil feeding takes place at the Tasmanian Devil Park at Taranna (near Port Arthur ), 11 am daily, and also at the Trowunna Wildlife Park near

They are both marsupials, which means a pouched animal. I chose the Tasmanian devil because I like Taz from Loony Tunes. Tasmanian devils have a growl that starts out as a whistle. Tasmanian devils are mammals. They're warm-blooded, have lungs, breathe oxygen from air, its young are born alive, and drink its mother's milk. They are related to opossums , and a variety of marsupial "mice" in Australia and New Guinea, as well as kangaroos Tasmanian devils hare black with white stripes around their arms, legs, head, and tails. They have a fur coat. Their body is almost 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 feet long. The tail is 9 to 12 inches long. They weigh 13 to 26 pounds. They can run 8 miles per hour. The female gives birth to 4 or 5 babies. They live for 7 to 8 years. Tasmanian devils live in the forest of Tasmania. Tasmania is an island near Australia. They only live in Tasmania. They make burrows in small caves and logs. Tasmanian devils have been known to eat plastic, rubber boots, and gloves. Tasmanian devils eat wallabies, kangaroo rats, mice, and poisonous snakes. Tasmanian devils hunt for food unless they find an animal that is already dead. Tasmanian devils have sharp teeth so they can eat meat and catch their own food.

The Tasmanian Devil ( Sarcophilus harrisi ) is a solitary marsupial from dry eucalyptus forests and brush in Tasmania. These animals are the largest living carnivorous (meat-eating) marsupials. They're at the top of their local food web. They are protected animals due to their decreasing numbers; they used to also be found on the island of Australia, but were eliminated by dingos (wild dogs).
The Tasmanian Devil is nocturnal (most active at night). During the day it retreats to a burrow or a hollow log. The Tasmanian Devil has a life span of 8 years in the wild. Tasmanian Devils make shrieking noises, snorts, and snarls, which is why they were given their name. Anatomy : The Tasmanian Devil is from 20 to 30 inches (51-78 cm) long, and weighs from 13 to 22 pounds (6 to 10 kg). Females are smaller than males. It has black fur with white markings on the neck, shoulders, and rump. The Tasmanian Devil has powerful, bone-crunching jaws, much stronger than dog jaws. It has a large head, large teeth, a short, stocky body, and a hairy tail that is 10 inches (25 cm) long. It is not a fast runner. When it is excited, the Tasmanian Devil's pale pink ears turn deep red-purple. Diet : The Tasmanian Devil eats just about anything. It prefers

Tasmanian DEVIL
The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous (eats meat) marsupial (a mammal that has its babies in a pouch) in Australia. Tasmanian Devils are a nocturnal (active at night) animal. lives alone and prefers its own company hence it is a relatively shy animal
DESCRIPTION
The Tasmanian Devil is usually black with a white "collar" or patch around its neck. It is the size of a small terrier dog very solid and "stout" and weighs in between 6 and 8 kgs It has a tail of between 9 to 12" long. Tasmanian Devils have an extremely
large powerful head with a wide jaw with sharp teeth pointy pink ears (that turn red when angry due to increased blood flow) and piercing dark eyes
Its dark colouring helps it to move around unseen at night time (feeding time)
The Tasmanian Devil is now only found on the island state of Tasmania and lives in coastal scrub and eucalypt forests. It is a scavenger so Tasmanian Devils are also found near human settlements
They spend the daytime out of sight sleeping in dens lined with grass and leaves made in hollow logs, or old wombat burrows or small natural caves They can conserve energy by going into a state of "Tupor" where its body heat drops to match its surroundings See the Pygmy Possum page for more about Torpor FIGHTING
Tasmanian Devils by nature are not aggressive until it comes to food. Then they are protective of its find and / or kill even to the extent of killing another Devil that wanted its catch. These fights result in many a Tasmanian Devil having bald patches of missing fur and appearing battle-scarred.

Tasmanian devils are fierce animals that live in southwest Tasmania. It eats small mammals and reptiles, plus any dead animals it can find. It hunts mainly at night and spends the day in a cave, hollow log, or other shelter. They measure 3-4 feet long, including a tail of 1 foot. It is the one of the (if not the largest) largest marsupials. It weighs 4.1-11.8 kilograms. Most have black fur with white markings, but some are entirely black. It looks like a small wolf. It has a bear-like shape with a large head and long, bushy tail. It is dark, which helps it camoflauge; and has a pale throat and side patches and muzzle. The tasmanian devil eats snakes, birds, rodents, lizards, and wallabies. It drinks water. The tasmanian devil can live at a variety of places such as dense rain forests or open plains. Female devils have a backwards-opening pouch with four teats and give birth to an average little of four. The devil was common in Australia until it was exterminated there because of killing a large number of livestock and poultry.

The devils of Tasmania are the largest of the remaining carnivorous marsupials. They are endemic to Tasmanian the island state of Australia. Although there is evidence that they were on the mainland of Australia about 600years ago.
The Tasmanian devil is the size of a small dog and can be tamed if hand raised from a 12 week old joey as we have done at Talune Wildlife Park. The devil is normally a shy animal seldom seen by people even when they are out walking in Tasmania's 'bush' (forests). Tasmanian devils are scavengers eating anything from grubs, lizards to dead wallaby and other larger marsupials as well as carcases of dead domestic stock, however, they are killers and will 'dog' the pray from many miles bringing down wallaby, small wombats, and other marsupials. They can be seen scavenging on beaches eating sea weed and small animals in the flotsam washed ashore. The odd old boot (hiker and camper beware) is regarded as an acceptable meal for a hungry devil.
