Each component of the program is an integral part of the district’s fundamental commitment to meet individual learning needs. Intellectually gifted students have all the normal needs of their peers; therefore, the Gifted and Talented Program evolves as a natural refinement of the District’s present system of providing for individual differences. Classes are designed to meet the unique needs of students identified as having academic potential. The guiding characteristic of the program is to provide each student with extensions for learning that afford open circuits for exploring, experiencing and expressing. Using IQ as one predictor of giftedness, activities are structured to guide students’ growth as learners and producers, to aid in accurate self-assessment of students’ own unique abilities and needs, and to stimulate students’ development of higher level thought processes.

Since it's inception, ArtsTeach has been bringing all forms of the arts to elementary schools across San Antonio. We intend to continue our commitment to better education through the arts by seeing that the ArtsTeach program reaches more children in San Antonio and the surrounding area each year. Last school year alone, we were able to reach almost 18,500 children which is 6,000 more than the 2000-2001 school year, an increase of 33% in the total number of students served. Through the ArtsTeach program, ARTS San Antonio intends to continue building partnerships and developing the ever increasing knowledge that "the arts are basic to education". The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and talented adolescents: FEELING BOYS AND THINKING GIRLS: TALENTED ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS Jane Piirto, Ph.D. (ENTP) Trustees' Professor Director of Talent Development Education Ashland University Ashland, OH 44805 This article appeared in the Proceedings of the CAPT conference in Orlando, Florida in March 1998 ABSTRACT The MBTI was administered to 226 tenth and eleventh graders who qualified as gifted and talented. Sixty teachers of the talented and 25 elementary and high school teachers were also administered the MBTI. Talented teens preferred ENFP. Gender differences were calculated as well among artistic youth and academically talented youth. Male artistic youth preferred F and academic females preferred T. Teachers of the talented preferred ENFJ. Other teachers preferred ESFJ. Implications for teaching these students are discussed. FEELING BOYS AND THINKING GIRLS: TALENTED ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR TEACHER S The ESFJ teachers are exceptionally dependable, precise, critical of detail, hardworking, and expects others to be likewise. They have a deep respect for facts, and are particular about detail and routines. These educators are friendly, tactful, sympathetic, and need human contacts. They also show a great deal of loyalty to respected persons, institutions, and causes. Their foremost interest is in the direct and visible effects that situations have on peoples' lives. This research project was designed to explore the relationship between the intuitive (N) preference versus the sensing (S) preference and the judging (J) preference versus the perceiving (P) preference on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) taken by talented students and their teachers.

Sometimes a gifted and talented pupil will be equally good at everything in design and technology but often pupils are gifted and talented in certain parts of the subject. The breadth of designing and making means that some pupils will have abilities in a specific area but not so much in others. This could be due to outside influence such as a parent's job or a pupil's own interest in things like fashion or computers. Some pupils hide a particular talent until the right safe working environment and opportunity presents itself. Some ways to enable gifted and talented pupils to flourish:
  • Provide mini challenges - especially for boys Allow pupils to share their ideas and thoughts without being 'put down' by other pupils Develop good research skills so they can discover things for themselves
