Hong Kong to Hold Asian Olympic Table Tennis Qualifier Match
The Sydney Olympic Games Table Tennis Asian Qualifier Match, the largest of its kind, is scheduled to start in Hong Kong Feb 29. At the lot-drawing ceremony for singles on Feb 28, Chinese men players Ma Lin, Liu Guozheng and Wang Liqin and women players Sun Jin, Zhang Yining and Yang Ying took part in the match to get one number for single playing respectively. Chinese men players Kong Linghui, Liu Guoliang, and women players Wang Nan, Li Ju who have already won admission tickets to the Olympic Games, only take part in the doubles this time. Contestants for the single playing will first be divided up into eight groups for the preliminaries, and the eight contestants ranking first in each group will continue to compete in the following round robin match for seven qualifier numbers. If nothing goes wrong, the six Chinese players will all enter the top eight respectively, but only the best two of them would have a chance to win the admission tickets to the Olympic Games and the other two will be eliminated. A total of 108 players from 20 strong teams, including China, Japan, South Korea, China's Taipei and China's Hong Kong, which have just ended matches in the World Cup Table Tennis Match held in Kuala Lumpur, will gather in Hong Kong.

Normal sporting/PE kit (preferably dark coloured) and light soled sports shoes or trainers are appropriate. However, at a higher level there are specific requirements regarding size of hall, lighting, flooring etc. according to the level of competition, and better players demand higher quality equipment and clothing. Table tennis can be played in singles and doubles, and although games have traditionally been up to 21 points, games up to 11 are now table tennis law and replacing up to 21. Normally local league teams have 3 or 4 members, but 2-a-side leagues are becoming more popular. Polybat has been adapted from table tennis for severely physically disabled. Deng Yaping (China) - table tennis
Widely acclaimed as the greatest female in table tennis history, Deng Yaping was the top-ranked woman in the world for eight consecutive years from 1991. A naturally attacking player of small stature, she won 18 individual and team titles at either Olympic or world level during her illustrious career and was named Chinese Sports Personality of the Century in 1999.
She clinched Olympic gold in both singles and doubles at the Barcelona Games in 1992, and repeated the feat at the Atlanta Games four years later. She won the world singles title in 1991 and 1995, was world doubles champion with Qiao Hong in 1989 and 1995 and clinched both the world singles and doubles crowns for a third time in 1997.
Yaping first picked up a table tennis bat at the age of five and, after being coached by her father, she was beating the best players in China by the age of 13. "Even from an early age, I dreamed of being world champion," she said. In 1989, she won the Asian Cup and the following year clinched three titles at the 11th Asian Games.

Table Tennis - An Olympic Game For All!
One of the greatest aspect of our sport is everyone has played it at one time or another. Many of my friends in other Olympic sports can't make that statement. How many people have tried Equestrian ? Or have gotten a kick out of Taekwondo ? Or shot a bulls eye at 70 meters with a Bow and Arrow ? Or led your horse to water for some Water Polo ? Sorry, just had to! Of course, everyone has ridden a bike , hit a homer , shot a three-pointer thrown your friend, kicked a goal swum a lap, doubled off a slow pitch served an ace, ran a mile, spiked a ball, and lifted a dumbbell. I even know a couple of people who have speared their mate

Facilities Main: The ITTF recommends a minimum playing area of 14 m x 7 m for each table, with a perimeter zone of 6 metres. The playing area should be covered in an area where the game cannot be affected by any air currents. The recommended minimum seating is 5000. Warm-up facilities:
There should be 16 tables in the warm-up area and these must have similar characteristics to those used in the actual event. Not only must they be the same size, but they must also be in an area without any air currents. The competition area must be easily accessible from these facilities. Training facilities:
These should be no more than 30 minutes away from the Olympic Village. 16 tables will be available, all with similar characteristics to the tables used in the actual competition.
