The Flag of Sweden Geography Pages Flags Sweden's flag was adopted on June 22, 1906, but its design is hundreds of years old (it probably dates from 1521). The Swedish flag is blue with a golden-yellow Scandinavian cross. The colors are derived from the Swedish national arms and the design is from the Danish flag. Flag Day in Sweden is celebrated each year on June 6. On this date in 1523, King Gustav I Vasa began his reign (and Sweden was no longer under the control of Denmark), and in 1809, Sweden's new constitution was adopted. Geography of Sweden
A map of Sweden Sweden is one of the countries on earth located furthest from the Equator. It extends from north to south at roughly the same latitude as Alaska orin the Southern hemispherethe stretch of ocean between Cape Horn in South America and the Antarctic continent. In terms of area it is similar to Spain, Thailand or California. In population, it is in the same league as Belgium, Ecuador or New Jersey. A land of ancient bedrock, Sweden was settled later than most countries; yet its national government has relatively old roots. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. The size of the country changed: Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. What is now southern and western Sweden was conquered in 1658 from the then Danish- Norwegian union. During certain periods Sweden also had provinces on the southern and eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, and even colonies in North America and the West Indies. In 1905, a nearly century- old union with Norway was dissolved, but since 1812 Sweden's borders have been unchanged and the country has been spared from war. Today the Nordic countries (Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland), whose central portion is called Scandinavia, cooperate closely in many fields. Sweden nevertheless pursues a foreign policy based on non- participation in alliances, aimed at maintaining neutrality in wartime.

Ann Marie uses as working languages the Swedish, English, German and speaks a little Russian and French. Sweden Introduction
Background:
A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements was challenged in the 1990s by high unemployment, rising maintenance costs, and a declining position in world markets. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe delayed Sweden's entry into the EU until 1995, and waived the introduction of the euro in 1999.

Geography and climate
Sweden and big cities. The red boarders are regional parts. Sweden has an area of 450,000 km 2 (174,000 sq. mi.) similar to California, Cameroon, Iraq, Spain or Thailand. Half its land surface is covered with forest. Less than 10% is farmland. Nearly 100,000 lakes dot the countryside, which is relatively flat. A long mountain chain in the northwest reaches heights of up to 2,111 m (6,926 ft). There are thousands of islands along the jagged coast. The warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic gives Sweden a milder climate than other areas equally far north. Stockholm, the capital, is at almost the same latitude as southern Greenland but has an average temperature of about +18°C (64°F) in July. The winter temperatures average slightly below freezing and snowfall is moderate. Far northern Sweden has long and cold winters and bright summers of moderate temperatures; in June and July daylights lasts around the clock. See Survey Results and Test Yourself: Go>> In a nation called the world's superpower, only 17 percent of young adults in the United States could find Afghanistan on a map, according to a new worldwide survey released today. The young U.S. citizens received poor marks generally in geography. But then, as results showed, their counterparts in other countries were hardly star students.

Mount Everest Expedition Sweden scored highest; Mexico, lowest. The U.S. was next to last. "The survey demonstrates the geographic illiteracy of the United States," said Robert Pastor, professor of International Relations at American University, in Washington, D.C. "The results are particularly appalling in light of September 11, which traumatized America and revealed that our destiny is connected to the rest of the world." About 11 percent of young citizens of the U.S. couldn't even locate the U.S. on a map. The Pacific Ocean's location was a mystery to 29 percent; Japan, to 58 percent; France, to 65 percent; and the United Kingdom, to 69 percent.
