CARING FOR ARCHITECTURE People generally think of "architecture" in terms of buildings like houses, churches, and stores that are a familiar part of most landscapes. Conservators, however, use the term "architecture" to encompass a much broader range of structures including not only buildings but subway stations, large public monuments, and bridges. This brochure addresses concerns and questions you might have about a structure for which you are responsible. The range of materials found in the built environment is vast and changes constantly as new materials and technologies are developed. Wood, stone, metal, glass, plaster, ceramic, brick, terra cotta, concrete, paint, plastic, asphalt, and rubber are just a few of the materials you might have in your building. One material might be used several different ways in the same building. For example, ceramic tile could be found as both bathroom flooring and in the exterior facade, or glass may be used as both windows and flooring. Architectural conservators are familiar with both historic and modern building materials because both may be incorporated into a structure and require conservation. Architectural conservators are professionals trained to preserve cultural property. Their training may include graduate programs in historic preservation or in fine arts conservation. Some train at the undergraduate level in science, architecture, or engineering. Others may have experience in construction. Whether working alone or as part of a team, an architectural conservator brings a comprehensive understanding of building materials and deterioration processes to the preservation of a structure. Uncharacteristic Civility A visit to Tehran Metro, the world's newest underground urban transit system By: Ben Bagheri September 28, 2002 Mirrored from www.iranian.com n a recent trip to Iran, I was introduced to Tehran's newest public transportation amenity. The metro is a decidedly higher level of urban experience. From a tourist's point of view, it is a great experience and I recommend it to anyone who travels to the capital. For an average Tehrani, living in a large megapolis had meant lots of wasted time, smog inhalation and unpleasant social experiences in an outdated, faulty public transportation infrastructure. The new subway system I saw a few months ago, if expanded and maintained properly, is a much needed relief. See video clip Seeing and riding the metro for the first time is quite pleasant. It has a European feel (as Iranians say "kheylee khaarejee-ye!"). The brightly-colored orange chairs, placed in groups of 3, 4 or 5 against station walls are perhaps one of the first impressions that make the metro experience feel so "foreign", in spite of an attempt to use Persian design themes and architecture throughout the subway system. The bright chairs seem loud and out of character, compared to other public venues that have a much more conservative look with dark gray, black and brown colors that have marked the Islamic Republic era. Other factors for the foreign feel are smells and sounds. I have ridden the subway systems in many European and American cities where that same slight smoky haze and distinct smell exists even in systems where cars are electric, which makes you wonder where the smoke comes from!

The computer information system requirements of three of these new communications companies are reviewed in the context of the particular problems facing a system designer in Russia. Special reference is made to the companies' AM/FM/GIS problems and solutions. INTRODUCTION In 1991, negotiations were undertaken regarding the construction of optical fiber communications systems within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in general and within the Russian Federation in particular. Subsequent to approval in 1992, engineering design began for systems to be built within the Metro, or subway, tunnel networks in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The initial phase of construction for these systems was completed in 1993. Known as Macomnet and Metrocom, respectively, the operating companies are owned and managed by Russian-American joint stock companies that include as their majority stockholders the Metro organizations of the two cities. A third company - Rascom provides communications between the two cities using optical fibers placed in service along the Octyabrskaya Railway. The communications systems in these companies are based on the international Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) standard which is similar to the North American SONET standard.
