Pittsburgh International Airport Arrivals: Most flights (except commuter) arrive at the Airside building. Terminals A, B, C, D are really concourses A, B, C, D. Head to the center of the Airside Building. Descend the escalators to take the people mover to the Landside Building. Exit the security area, descend the escalator for baggage claim, rental cars and ground transportation. It typically takes 10 minutes to get from the plane to baggage claim. Departures/Security: There is one security check point for all departures. Security is generally fast, typically about 5-10 minutes. It takes an additional 10 minutes to get from security to your gate. There is a preferred line for USAirways Preferred Customers. USAirways and Baggage Claim: Pittsburgh is a USAirways hub. Baggage for anyone in the back of the plane is lowest priority; those in the front get only slightly better service. Expect a 10 minute wait (or longer) for bags to arrive at baggage claim (in addition to the 10-15 minutes it takes you to get to baggage claim). Other airlines seem to provide faster service.

The Metro Section Almost every large city has a metro. It has developed many names around the world; the subway, the tubes, the underground, the metro and many more. But these are not just a series of complicated underground trains which transport people faster, cheaper and more efficiently, they are an expression of architecture and culture. Metro stations develop their own unique styles, and are different all over the world. The purpose of this section of the BIG Buildings website is to simply display pictures of these beautiful and unique Subways. Click on a City's Metro name to see

The architectural elements of the original IRT subway included underground stations, elevated stations, ornamental control houses, kiosks, the main power house, eight power sub-stations, and rolling stock. The architecture of the subway can be classified generally as 20th-century traditional that is, architecture that "derives its sanctions from the traditions of the further past."

A RUSSIAN CASE STUDY
Robert F. Austin , Ph.D. Director, Applications Engineering Andrew Corporation - Telecom Networks c/o Academy of Sciences Prospekt Leninsky 34A Moscow 117334 Russian Federation
ABSTRACT
Several fiber optic telecommunications systems have been placed in service recently in Russia. The computer information system requirements of three of these new communications companies are reviewed in the context of the particular problems facing a system designer in Russia. Special reference is made to the companies' AM/FM/GIS problems and solutions.
INTRODUCTION
In 1991, negotiations were undertaken regarding the construction of optical fiber communications systems within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in general and within the Russian Federation in particular. Subsequent to approval in 1992, engineering design began for systems to be built within the Metro, or subway, tunnel networks in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The initial phase of construction for these systems was completed in 1993. Known as Macomnet and Metrocom, respectively, the operating companies are owned and managed by Russian-American joint stock companies that include as their majority stockholders the Metro organizations of the two cities. A third company - Rascom provides communications between the two cities using optical fibers placed in service along the Octyabrskaya Railway. The communications systems in these companies are based on the international Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) standard which is similar to the North American SONET standard.

with: John Bass, Darell Fields, Laura Miller, Gary Rohrbacher, Sarah Whiting Premise for the Studio: The Design of Housing Among contemporary architectural scenarios, housing supports the consideration of issues including: the subjectivity of intimate values and interior space, conflicts arising from privatization and public access, and notions of "density" versus individuality. The design of housing requires the constant reexamination of the contested realities existing between physical and social space—a relationship modulated through individual rooms, grouped dwellings, and competing visions of urban life. As such, housing is unavoidably social, political, and critical. Its successful invention, unlike more autonomous types, foregrounds the aesthetic tension between self-reflection and objective determinants. I'll probably get in trouble with some people for referring to New York's subway system as " The A The Metro (Montreal)
I found the Metro to be almost too good. It's super clean, efficient, and runs frequently. Plus they have those lights on the platform that flash when the train is arriving. I like that; no more having to run down the tracks to find out for myself. They also have this neat thing at the entrance that sucks in your pass and spits it out beyond the automatic gates; very high-tech. And let's not forget that i get to practice my high-school french when waiting for a train ("Je suis Michel. Quel heure est-il? Mon baguette est tres chaude", and so on.)
