Hurricane/Tropical Storm Information
The Bahamas, like all countries in and near the Caribbean Sea, is potentially at risk from hurricanes. The official hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, although hurricanes have been known to form in other months. August, September, and early October are traditionally the months of highest risk. Major hurricanes can cause extensive property damage and loss of life. Do not be caught unprepared! Develop a personal hurricane plan for yourself and your family! Preparations:
Hurricane Kit: Click here to see the list of recommended hurricane preparations. Please assemble these items now, before a storm is imminent. Test your battery-powered flashlights and radios ahead of time, to be certain they work. Evacuation Options : If your residence is on the ocean or not strongly-built, consider your evacuation options now. The attached list of shelters has been prepared by the Government of the Bahamas. Take the time to locate one or two near your home in case of emergency. Be prepared to bring all of your own supplies and bedding to the shelters, as they have very limited facilities. Another option is to stay with a friend or relative with a more-secure dwelling. A third option is to leave the island by air for a safe-haven in the United States. Please be aware that a major hurricane which threatens Nassau will also pose a serious threat to South Florida. Do no evacuate to Miami Beach, the Florida Keys, or other areas in Florida that are themselves a serious risk from hurricanes.

May 22, 2002 Hurricane expert predicts active storm season By John A. Torres
FLORIDA TODAY
It’s that time of the year again. Sunny skies, warm weather and the threat of hurricanes. The 2002 hurricane season begins June 1, and it’s the first one for many Brevard and Indian River County newcomers. This guide - filled with tips and information on preparing for a storm - is to help them learn fast, and to remind all residents of how important it is to prepare early. Hurricane expert William Gray has predicted an active 2002 hurricane season with 12 named storms and seven hurricanes, three of them Category 3 or stronger. Gray, an atmospheric scientist at Colorado State University who has become the nation's best- known hurricane forecaster, predicts a 58 percent chance of Florida getting at least one major hurricane with winds greater than 111 mph.

Hurricanes in the Northern Hemisphere rotate counterclockwise (west to east) and move through the ocean clockwise (east to west). In the Southern Hemisphere, hurricanes rotate clockwise (east to west) and move counterclockwise (west to east). These motions, known as the Coriolis effect , are caused by the Earth's rotation. To monitor and track the development and movement of a hurricane, we rely on remote sensing by satellites , as well as data gathered by the Hurricane Hunters The Hurricane Hunters are members of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron/403rd Wing, based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Since 1944, the U.S. Department of Defense (which oversees the U.S. military) has been the only organization to fly into tropical storms and hurricanes. Since 1965, the Hurricane Hunters team has used the C-130 Hercules, a very sturdy
