Hurricane and storm tracking system uses data from the US National Weather Service to provide storm warnings for the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Hurricane storm tracking for the Atlantic Pacific Oceans For information on tropical activity in the South Pacific, go to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center
http://hurricane.terrapin.com/
The StormTrack system receives weather data from the US National Weather Service via satellite. The system creates an entry for each tropical depression, storm, or hurricane when the National Weather Service begins issuing advisories. The North Atlantic 'best track' (so named as it is the 'best' track and intensity estimates of tropical cyclones as determined in a post-analysis of all available data) is maintained by the forecasters and researchers at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. Permission to make free access of this data and documentation were provided by Dr. Robert Sheets - director of NHC and by Mr. Neal Lott of the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC. Though the data extends back to 1886, one is cautioned in deriving seasonal statistics back that many years. The advent of aircraft reconnaissance in 1944 is suggested (both by myself and C.J. Neumann) to be the start of reliable seasonal statistics on the frequency and duration of storms. However, as reported in Landsea (1993) ["A climatology of intense (or major) Atlantic hurricanes"

The 2002 Hurricane/Tropical Season has now come to a close. NOAA: EL NINO SUPPRESSED HURRICANES IN 2002 SEASON
Lili Was First Land-falling Hurricane In Three Years
"A strengthening El Niño suppressed the numbers of hurricanes and weakened storms," said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Jack Kelly, director of the NOAA National Weather Service. "Thanks to El Niño's influence, we experienced only four hurricaneshalf the number we've seen in typical seasons since 1995," Kelly added. Overall in 2002, there were 12 named storms, of which four became hurricanes. Hurricanes Lili and Isidore were classified as major (category 3 or higher on the Saffir Simpson hurricane scale). Eight storms (Tropical Storms Bertha, Edouard, Fay and Hanna; and Hurricanes Gustav, Isidore, Kyle and Lili) affected the coastal United States. Hurricane Lili was the only storm to make landfall while still a hurricane. The other 2002 storms were: Tropical Storms Arthur, Cristobal, Dolly and Josephine. CPC Director Jim Laver noted they correctly predicted El Niño would suppress the season's "overall activity" (based on a complex formula used by the scientists that combines the number of tropical storms, and their duration and intensity). He pointed out, here were two more named tropical storms than the range of 7-10 predicted, but because several named storms were weak, and of short duration they contributed little to the scientific measure of diminished "overall activity."
