Growing up I found out the importance of heritage and what it can mean in your life. I come from a line of Scotch_Irish on my mothers side of the Family. The Wyly's were the name and it has a definite Irish ring to it. :-) It is one of the few nationalities that have a specific holiday for it in the United States. The Irish communites were large and strong in the early founding days of our country. It is such a complex culture of quaintness and stubborness and thru song, dance and folklore everyone has a picture of the Irish as being strong, yet gentle and funny yet serious. History of St Patricks Day Patrick was born in Britain, in a Romanized family. His father was Calpurnius, a local official. Patrick was taken away as as a slave by the Irish raiders in Ireland where he spent 6 years in slavery. It is during this period he became closer to God. After six years, after getting a message from God in dream, he escaped from the slavery, to Britain, in a ship. It said that he reunited with his family, and then went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for a period of twelve years. During his training he became aware that his calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity. The best known passage in the Confessio, his spiritual autobiography, tells of a dream, after his return to Britain, in which one Victoricus delivered him a letter headed "The Voice of the Irish." As he read it he seemed to hear a certain company of Irish beseeching him to walk once more among them. "Deeply moved," he says, "I could read no more." Once in the field, however, his hesitations vanished. Utterly confident in the Lord, he journeyed far and wide, baptizing and confirming with untiring zeal. In diplomatic fashion he brought gifts to a kinglet here and a lawgiver there but accepted none from any. On one occasion he addressed with lyrical pathos a last farewell to his converts who had been slain or kidnapped by the soldiers of Coroticus.

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day By Gina Williams As I sat thinking about what I wanted to share with you this week. I thought fondly of when I was newly married and my husband and I were learning about each other's families, holidays and traditions. My husband was amazed at my excitement and spirit to celebrate and decorate our home for every holiday. He couldn't believe how I went all out, for all the holidays. I think traditions are wonderful and I am happy to say that I have carried on many from my childhood and created new traditions with my family. We all love the festivities associated with the holidays and it gives us a little break from everyday life. My tip for the week is to create a tradition in your home. A tradition can be large or small. No matter what the size traditions are special, especially to children. With St. Patrick's day nearly approaching our house is adorned with green decorations and a pot of gold windsock hanging by our front door. My children are buzzing with excitement about the leprechauns approaching visit. Years ago my children started putting their shoes by the front door on the eve before St. Patrick's day. When they awoke the mysterious leprechauns had filled their shoes with treats. Oh by the way, I forgot to mention I'm not even Irish! You don't have to be Irish to enjoy the holiday. A tradition can be something as simple as a special meal. I wanted to give you some great ideas for making your St. Patrick's day fun as well as memorable.

St Patrick's Challenge (and recipes - see below) With St Patrick's Day on the way, our thoughts turn to all things Irish. Pretty soon advertisers will be encouraging the nation to enjoy a pint or two of the black stuff - the black stuff in question being stout. Stout, a full-bodied, rich, traditionally strong drink made with roasted unmalted barley, has two main styles - the dry, Irish version and the sweet English version. As March the 17th approaches, The Vegetarian Society would like to issue a challenge to brewers in the UK to produce a nationally available stout which everyone can enjoy. At present, none of the major producers have a product which isn't fined with animal derived material. The use of animal derived products in the production of alcoholic beverages is fairly widespread, not because no alternatives exist, but because they always have been used. It is not easy to find out whether alcoholic drinks are suitable for vegetarians. A clause in the 1984 Food Labelling Regulations excludes from the 1984 Food Act all drinks with an alcohol content exceeding 1.2% by volume (ABV), so only very low or non-alcoholic beers, wines and ciders are required to list all ingredients. In our quest for improved choice for vegetarians, we are challenging the major brewers of stout, pub chains and retailers to provide a nationally available stout that everyone can drink by St Patrick's Day 2003. We will be challenging the brewers through the media and contacting them directly.

Scrapbook Irish and Favorite ZeeZee Gardens' Recipes Pat's Irish Stew Ingredients: 1 1/2 large white onions; 1 1/2 ounces whiskey; 4 cans beer;1 1/2 lbs to 2 lbs beef; 5 or 6 carrots; 2 cups water; 4 T oil; 3 or 4 large potatoes (or 8 russet) Select your choice of meat (stewing beef, sirloin, etc.). Cut into small chunks, approximately an inch square. Season fairly heavily with garlic salt or seasoned salt. (whichever you prefer) Sear the meat in a large boiling pot with olive oil and one and half large cut up onions. Add an ounce and half of Jameson Irish Whiskey, or other "whiskey" type 'Hooch' you have around the house. If you don't maintain that stuff borrow if from a neighbor! Add four cans of beer and bring to a full boil. After it boils for about 20 minutes, back it down to a nice simmer. Separately, boil your potatoes and carrots until they are medium hard or medium soft. Once the "stew" has simmered for about an hour and a half, separately prepare a dark gravy (called a rue in Louisiana) of some sort in another skillet and add this. If you are in a hurry, grab some "Kitchen Bouquet" and toss that in. "I don't do it that way but my brother Kevin does and it turns out even better sometimes." Check the stew to see if additional water or beer is needed. Then, add your vegetables. Let this simmer for another 40 minutes. The stew should have a consistency more like gravy than soup with the meat very tender and the potatoes and carrots soft but not falling apart in the stew.

Irish Stew (Ballymaloe) 3 lb Lamb neck chops 4 x Med-sized carrots 4 x Med-sized onions 1 T Butter 1 x Lamb fat or beef dripping 4 x Potatoes 1 x Salt and pepper 2 1/2 c Stock or water 1 T Chopped parsley 1 T Chopped chives Method Shred some of the lamb fat and render it down in a heavy casserole. Peel onions and potatoes, scrape carrots. Cut the meat into 8 pieces; only the excess fat is cut away. Bones need not be removed. Cut the carrots and onions in quarters. Toss meat in fat until color changes, and repeat with onions and carrots. Add stock and season carefully. Put whole potatoes on top. Simmer gently until the meat is cooked, 2 hours approx. Pour off the cooking liquid. Degrease, and reheat in another saucepan. Check seasoning. Then swirl in butter, chives, parsley, and pour back over stew.
