Introduction
Click here to buy from Amazon.com The first point to note is that this book is published by O'Reilly. The second point would be that Steven Feuerstein is generally regarded to be one of the worlds leading PL/SQL experts. Those two point, on their own, were enough to clinch the purchase just over eighteen months ago.
Content
The book is, to say the least, comprehensive. When I first started to use PL/SQL I would never have guessed that there was enough there to write a thousand page book, but there is. It's split into seven sections and twenty-six chapters, making it a good reference as well as useful to learn from. Section one, 'Programming in PL/SQL' talks about the history, block structure and style. I'm not entirely convinced that 'programming style' belongs in a book such as this, but it's well written, useful and less intrusive than the similar treatment in " Practical C Section two moves onto the 'meat' of the language and takes up over two-hundred pages in its own right longer than the whole of some other texts! Feuerstein covers all this in detail and with great skill, mentioning not only how the language works but also, where appropriate, where it doesn't work. This kind of honesty seems rare, especially in Oracle Press books!

The product manual is great because you can learn T-SQL quickly without wading through a lot of stuff you don't need. But I must admit at times, the product manual has fallen short in the more complicated SQL manipulations. This new O'Reilly book (the cover is of wallcreepers - birds from North Africa) is great because it covers the T-SQL stuff including the more complex stuff but is also covers the intro concepts, admin, and debugging material. The first part of the book covers rational theory and the history of T-SQL. If you're new to databases, this will interest you. The second part of the book covers the basics of data types, T-SQL, cursors, common objects, and transactions. The next two sections cover T-SQL programming including functions, statements, contraints, views, and stored procs. The last section covers performance tuning and optimization. The book is appropriate for both MS and Sybase SQL Server. The appendices cover the system tables, MS SQL 7.0, and the BCP utility.

    Procedural Versus Declarative Languages
SQL is not a procedural language but a declarative language. You write a single SQL declaration and hand it to the DBMS. The DBMS then executes internal code, which is hidden from us. The DBMS returns a set, which is a group of data that is somehow defined. For example, we write a SQL statement that would translate as something like Give me the last names of all the employees. The DBMS will work away for a few milliseconds and then produce a set that contains Adams, Barrett, Cao, etc. In a declarative language, we carefully phrase what we want and then let the DBMS get it for us. If we have written a good SQL statement then the resulting set of data will be correct. Procedural languages result in many lines of code. Declarative languages result in one statement of the desired result.

Connecting the Front and Back Ends
Having established a front end and a DBMS back end, we then need to connect them through some type of software. The connection functions include: defining which datastore to use, how to transfer SQL statements and results, and a host of settings that control the above processes. For example, in VB we may want to work with data in an Access database. We need to establish a connection to pass SQL statements to Access. We will want to establish how to handle multiple-user conflicts as well as whether to read the data as fast as possible or with more flexibility. Once these parameters are set for the data communication, we then need a way of actually sending our SQL statement to the DBMS. By analogy, if the front and back ends are like telephone handsets, then the connection is like the telephone company equipment and wires. When starting a call we first establish a connection by dialing the other party and waiting for the phone company to connect the correct wires. Then we can begin using English across the connection. In the same way, we create a connection between our front- and back-end software, then we use SQL statements to communicate across that connection.

    SQL Programming
In order to work with databases you must have some knowledge of SQL programming. SQL is a programming language that is not owned or developed by any company, however most all databases vendors rely on this programming standard. This must not be confused with Microsoft's SQL Server, which is merely one database, that as well uses the SQL programming language. (For purposes on this article, all references to SQL are referring to the standardized programming language.) Most of the lower level databases such as Microsoft's Access or FileMaker have easy to use design interfaces which simplify the design of a database. On the other hand, the more powerful databases don't have easy to use interfaces, and if you want to work with a robust DBMS (Database Management Systems), you will have to have a solid understanding of how to create tables, fields, indexes, triggers, and manage relationships.

Recommended ISBN: Publisher: O'Reilly Pages: 987pp+disc Price: Categories: database Reviewed by Michael Minihane in C Vu 12-2 (Mar 2000) PL/SQL is Oracle's procedural language extension to SQL, for use in those cases where SQL functionality on its own isn't sufficient. Ubiquitous across the various Oracle products, PLSQL has seen many different versions and supports development both server-side in the database and client-side in application code. The book starts with an overview of the different versions available and then throughout, when features are introduced, it's made clear if there are restrictions for use across versions. This works well, as the progression is from fundamentals to advanced features and as you would expect the Oracle 8 features are dealt with towards the end. The author takes the trouble early on to discuss coding style in general and the reasoning behind his personal style, before the detailed discussion of language features. The examples used in the book are useful and the comments on approach show real experience. This evidence of living in the real world is added to in the later stages of the book with sections on design, debugging and tuning. The book is suitable for use both as a learning aid and as a reference. It's my first choice for answering PL/SQL questions and certainly much more useful than the Oracle supplied documentation.

Book Review Instant SQL Programming by Joe Celko ISBN: Publisher: Wrox Press Pages: 389pp+disk Price: Categories: database Reviewed by David M Holmes in C Vu 8-4 (May 1996) The book starts with an overview of the Structured Query Language, including discussions of the Data Definition Language, Data Manipulation Language and Data Control Language. It proceeds to explain how to define databases and includes a basic introduction to database theory such Normalisation and Referential Integrity. The author soon presents the SELECT command and then leads the reader on to more advanced topics such as joining tables, subqueries and views. There is also a section on Embedded SQL , with an example of C embedded SQL Included with the book are two 3.5" discs containing a special edition runtime version of Watcom SQL 4.0, which requires a PC running MS Windows. To aid those who may be running SQL engines from other vendors, conversion notes, for the SQL used in each chapter, are included for Oracle, Sybase and Access. The text is clear and easy to follow and with examples throughout the book and present on the discs, it would be an excellent quick-start guide for the absolute beginner. However, its shelf life as a reference book seems limited.
