Inequality in Sports: Schools Found to Routinely Flout or be ignorant of Title IX laws By Carl Prine
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
from the November-December 2002 issue of IRE Journal Read the series: Second String: Gender ineqality in high school athletics
It seemed like such a simple idea. The assignment: Investigate whether public high schools in western Pennsylvania discriminate against young women when it comes to sports. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wondered if school policies and practices kept young women and their coaches from learning lifelong lessons about competition, discipline and leadership. At the top of the Tribune's wish list: Give parents a detailed snapshot of how their tax dollars are spent to boost boys' teams, not girls' teams.

Harvard Study Finds that More College Sports Fans Binge Drink Than Non-Fan Students Press Release Abstract Article Targeted Marketing and Advertising by the Alcohol Industry Likely Influencing Fans' Heavy Drinking BOSTON (December 9, 2002) – In the first national study of the drinking habits of college sports fans, findings released today from the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/cas) show that more sports fans binge drink and have alcohol-related problems than non-fan students. In addition, schools with larger proportions of fans are more likely to have high rates of binge drinking, which lead to large numbers of students who suffer the second-hand effects of others’ drinking. These findings come as the college football season is coming to a close—after the recent riots at Ohio State University—and in the midst of the college basketball season, which closed last year with riots at the University of Maryland. “We know that student athletes binge drink more than non-athletes,” said lead author Toben Nelson. “But, until now, no one has taken a systematic look at fans. It turns out that fans are similar to athletes in their extreme drinking behavior, and that behavior has played out the last few weeks in the form of riots after a game win or loss.”
