News and Reviews Biological Control at National Entomology Society Meetings The following is a continuation of brief summaries of some presentations made at the 1997 National Meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Nashville (see previous issue 1. Autodissemination of entomopathogenic fungi: A tool for biological control of the diamondback moth - J. Pell, IACR, Rothamsted, England Work done in Malaysia and Africa has shown that fungal pathogens of diamondback moth , such as Beauveria bassiana and Zoophthora radicans , can effectively be spread using specialized traps. Male moths are lured into traps in response to synthetic sex pheromone. As they leave the trap they get contaminated with a lethal dose of the fungus. When they disperse back to the crop they disseminate spores to susceptible larvae and establish new infections. Transmission of Z. radicans is low (10-15%), but of B. bassiana to other adults (93-100%) and larvae (70%) is high. 2. Parasitoids found in on-farm stored shelled corn in Kentucky - B. Off-Site Links Acari (Mites, Ticks) Specimens of ticks are mostly from temperate and boreal areas of North America, primarily in Canada. The holdings of mites represent a much broader coverage of North America as a whole, including substantial material from Mexico. Considerable material from Central and South America and a scattering of material from Europe, Asia and elsewhere is also included. There are large holdings of free-living mites from arctic localities in North America and Russia. The Canadian National Collection of Araneae is one of the two largest collections of spiders in Canada. Nearly 200,000 specimens of spiders are curated and preserved in alcohol in 22 cabinets. About 70% of the collection is curated to the level of species or species group, and 85% of the collection is curated to the genus level. About 200 primary types are housed in the Araneae collection, in part through the acquisition of the spider collections of D. Jennings. The holdings of spiders are mostly from temperate and boreal areas of North America, primarily in Canada. Scattered material is also included from Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Web Camp 2000 Is Online! http://hub1.worlded.org/spiders/ Materials from "Spiders at Work: A Web Camp for Literacy Practitioners" are now on the Web thanks to Jeff Carter of New England Literacy Resource Center (NERLC) at World Education. The LAC, along with NERLC and other northeastern literacy organizations, sponsored this event, which was described in the October Literacy Update. In brief, Web Camp brought fifteen adult literacy practitioners together for an intensive week of training in Web design so that these educators could construct user-friendly sites whose content and form would appeal to adult learners. Making Links for a Learner-Friendly Web Web Camp 2000 The "Web" as metaphor is meant to conjure a positive image: multiple strands of interlocking information that users can traverse as easily and as delicately as a spider negotiates a web's dewy filaments. For the adult learner, however, the World Wide Web can seem more like an impenetrable maze than a set of linked pathways to knowledge; the Web remains largely off-limits because the sites themselves are navigationally complex, filled with difficult language, or simply unrelated to their lives and concerns. Preparing the Strands Diverse as the educators producing them, Web Camp projects range from a low-literacy oriented site for survivors of violence (Janet Isserlis, Literacy Resources/RI, Rhode Island) to a site geared to building sight word vocabulary (Stacie Evans, Stanley Isaacs House, New York). Underlying all projects is the same basic philosophy: sites should be easy to navigate, contain language accessible to low-level readers or ESOL learners, and, most importantly, feature content that is meaningful to marginalized adult learners.
