Web Wonders
Imagine: Search engines that actually find what you're looking for BY FENELLA SAUNDERS
Click for larger view.
WebTheme makes searching beautiful: Peaks denote collections of relevant Web sites; the distance between them indicates how closely the subjects are related. Zooming in creates a new map centered on one set of results.
(Image available to download from PictureThis TRYING TO FIND SOMETHING ON the Internet is a lot like rummaging through countless cardboard boxes in a dark attic. Even if the search is eventually successful, it almost always turns up too much junk. Worse, no search is ever comprehensive. The dark attic of the Internet is only infiltrated as far as the very limited capabilities of a particular search engine. Yahoo's directory, for example, is merely an index of selected sites cataloged by anonymous editors. Other popular indexers such as Excite, Lycos, and Alta Vista send spindly bits of software known as spiders meandering from Web site to Web site, sucking up bits of text from each page they encounter and making a list of the keywords they find. This patchy list C not the Web itself C is what a search engine actually searches.

32 A4 pages Personally I try to promote insects as beautiful and amazing so calling a book "Extremely Weird Insects" was not getting off to a good start, though I appreciate the selling power of the title there are two many forces telling kids that bugs are weird already. However I could easily forgive the title if the book was amazing, but it is not, it contains a few nice photos and some varyingly accurate text. It is large format and colourful, each of the 15 insects gets 2 pages to itself and there appear to be some children's drawings inset to several of the pages. Value for money? I suppose so but not excellent. The insects chosen are not in fact particularly weird except to the minds of the uneducated, all a reasonable common with straight-forward life cycles. The design is not stunning, and in some places is a little confusing. An inset on the wings and halteres of flies is on page 10, a page otherwise devoted to

"Intoduction to Writing Spiders and Web Agents"

Alexis Park Resort, Las Vegas Nevada Aug 5, 2002 During the summer of 2002, I was honered to be a speaker at DEF CON X , the definitive computer security conference. Attendees of my session learned the basics of writing web spiders, whichunlike browsersare special purpose programs that do very specific things on the Internet. More importantly than basic knowledge of how to write spiders, people attending my lecture learned the capabilities of web spiders and left the conference armed with ideas for creating spiders and web agents of their own designs.
