Food of South Korea
Like most ethnic groups throughout the world, South Korea has developed their own food culture to suit their unique history and climate. Not only has the geographical boundaries which separate it from its neighbours impacted on the food culture of the nation, but the four dis tinct seasons have also influenced what South Koreans eat. Koreans feel strongly that food should be harmonized with natural spices and that balanced meals during the day are good for the health. Most also think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Because of their agricultural background and Confucian tradition, Koreans place great importance on proper table settings and table etiquette, and they have special foods for different seasons and for seasonal festivals. A typical Korean meal called "pekpan" consists of rice, the staple of every Korean meal, soup and a great many side dishes, one of which is "kimch'i" . The sweet sticky rice accompanies every meal and may be plain or seasoned. Soup is also served a lot. Other dishes include seafood, meat or poultry, vegetables, herbs and roots. The food is arranged beautifully on the table, each person getting individual servings of all of the dishes, sometimes as many as

Category Description This category is for English web sites emanating from and relating to Korea. NB: All Korean language web sites go to World: Korean South Korea is the nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It was established at the end of World War II after Japan's annexation over the area from 1910-1945. South Korea shares a 243 km border with North Korea along the 38th Parallel, and fought a war against North Korea and China from 1950-1953 where a northern attack was successfully repulsed. The nation is still technically at war with North Korea and reunification is still a touchy issue. Many families are still divided between the south and the hardline Stalinist north.

South Korea Index Constitutional Background
The Constitution, adopted 17 July 1948, was amended in 1952, 1954, 1960, 1962, 1972, 1980, and on 29 Oct 1987 ( cf. History and News ). The 1987 Constitution, including direct presidential elections, was unanimously approved by the National Assembly and supported in a national referendum. A special feature of the Constitution is the duty to work (Art. 32 II 1 ). The following information has been kindly provided to ICL and will be updated by Rüdiger Frank
With its Western name deriving from the kingdom of Koryò (918-1392), Korea has a long history of political, economic and social development. The political culture is strongly influenced by the legacy of Neo-Confucianism, which was the determining standard for daily life and public administration for several centuries. Preference of formal learning over practical skills, a highly centralized administration, factional strife and a lack of political compromise are only some features of traditional Korean politics.
It took until the opening at end of the 19th century for Western ideas to come to Korea on a broad basis. The current system of legislation and the first Korean constitution originated from the Kabo reforms of 1894, but what followed was the loss of independence to Japan after the treaties of protection (1905) and annexation (1910). After the liberalization in 1945, the country was divided into two spheres of influence by the Soviet Union and the USA roughly along the 38th parallel. In the midst of the Cold War between the superpowers, the division became permanent with the foundation of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the South and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the North. The antagonism between the two parts of Korea and their supporters led to the Korean War (1950-1953), which is seen in Korea as the biggest national tragedy and overshadowing the relations on the Korean peninsula until the present day.
