83. The Influence Of Language On Culture
I think that an important reason why south korea has such a collectivist cultureis because of the influence of the korean language on the minds of the people
http://www.hongik.ac.kr/~tidings/no_102/102-15.html
UNDER WESTERN EYES The Influence of Language on Culture By Donna Cho, English Instructor G eert Hofstede wrote an article describing the cultures of fifty different countries that was published in The International Journal of Intercultural Relations in 1986. He looked at the cultures of these fifty countries and characterized them along four different dimensions. One dimension was the tendency toward what Hofstede called "collectivism" or "individualism." Collectivist cultures are those where the focus of the people is on the group rather than the individual. Individualist cultures are those where the focus is on the individual rather than the group. South Korea ranked low on individualism. South Korea was rated at about 18 on a scale of 12 to 91 on individualism whereas the U.S.A. rated 91 which was the highest possible score. Hofstede characterized cultures of countries like South Korea as having low individualism and high collectivism, and cultures of countries like the U.S.A. as having high individualism and low collectivism. Other countries with high individualism scores like the U.S.A. were Australia and Great Britain. Countries with low individualism scores like South Korea included Thailand, Taiwan, Peru, Chile, Salvador, Singapore, Colombia, Indonesia, Venezuela, Panama, Guatemala, Equador, Pakistan, and some of the West African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, and Sierra Leone). Interestingly, in Hosfstede's study, Japan had a score of 45 on individualism which is about halfway between South Korea and the U.S.A's scores. I had thought that Japan and South Korea would have had more similar scores on individualism.

Old-new mix brings Korean culture to life
By HIROKO NISHIMURA, Asahi Shimbun News Service For many people, the World Cup represents a chance to let their hair down and indulge in a feast of quality soccer. But this year's tournament has implications that go far beyond sports. The hope is that co-hosts Japan and the Republic of Korea (South Korea)-geographical neighbors yet in many ways distant strangers-will seize the opportunity to extend their mutual understanding and cordiality. One way this is being achieved is through a variety of cross-cultural programs taking place here in Tokyo until shortly after the World Cup. Most focus on South Korea's rich historical and cultural heritage, and include demonstrations of Korean kite-making, masterful calligraphy, an energetic Bongsan mask dance at Tokyo Opera City, as well as a treasure-studded display of prehistoric Korean artifacts at the Tokyo National Museum. Of course, South Korea's cultural appeal lies not only in centuries-old traditions, but also in its dynamic modernity. ``Seoul Pop 2002: Korean Popular Culture,'' now running at Tokyo's Setagaya Art Museum in Kinuta Park, is one colorful showcase that offers insight into the vivid dynamism of contemporary Korean culture.

Is South Korea the blueprint for society's future?

Much has been made of South Korea's 60 percent broadband adoption rate , but the real story is the effect that the technology has had on the culture itself. The New York Times offers a great article examining the changing lives of young Koreans, 80 percent of whom spend most of their time in broadband gaming clubs. Critics accuse the games of turning Koreans into "zombies", while psychiatrists believe the new cultural shift is making young adults more uncommunicative and violent (or dead from 86 hour binges). Others argue that the clubs are simply changing the way humans interact.
