The University Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, is one of South Carolina's 12 state-supported universities. As one of the state's six comprehensive institutions, FMU prides itself on providing a strong liberal arts education. Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the "Swamp Fox" for using the South Carolina terrain to out-fox the British, the University enrolls nearly 4,000 students. The University offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select number of graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businesses and industries of the Pee Dee region. Francis Marion is the only state university serving the Pee Dee region, and many of its students are the first in their families to go to college. FMU has the look and feel of a small, liberal arts college with all the benefits of a state-supported comprehensive university. FMU offers an excellent learning environment, small enough to afford students personalized attention from faculty and staff, and large enough to let students expand their horizons. While 93 percent of its students come from South Carolina, the University enrolls students from 32 states and 34 foreign countries, allowing the FMU community to experience the diversity of people from other cultures. The student-faculty ratio is 16 to 1, and the overall class size is 20. The average age of undergraduates is 22, while the average age of graduate students is 36.

General Information
The String Project is a quintessential model of service-learning. It allows undergraduates to learn new skills, to think critically, and to test their roles as professionals in an environment that rewards competence. Since 1974, the String Project has had a positive effect on the cultural climate of the state of South Carolina. There are students and alumni in all five districts in the Columbia area. Many orchestra teachers throughout the state received their education program at the University and the String Project. In the 21st century, the challenge in all teaching will be meeting the needs of diverse populations. This will have an impact on education at all levels, from early childhood through the university. The String Project allows our future graduates to refine their teaching skills while still in school, so they might meet these demands. As our profession, along with other areas of teaching, faces shortages, it is more important than ever that our young teachers feel competent as they enter the profession. Since 67% of the nation's children are exposed to music instruction through school programs, this is essential for not only the preservation of our art, but for maintaining access for large numbers of students. Access to music instruction can be divided along economic lines. The philosophy of the University and of the String Project is to maintain the affordability of our instruction to minimize this division.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Because physical education generally has not been considered a "core" subject by educators and policymakers, national and state-based school reform efforts launched within the past decade often have left P.E. sitting on the bench. But when lawmakers in South Carolina began considering legislation to mandate the establishment of state education standards, physical education professionals there stepped up to the plate to ensure their place at the reform table. "Professionals in the state of South Carolina made a case to be part of the current standards, assessment and accountability movement," said Darla Castelli, a professor of
