Pat Conroy SC Homegrown Literature Homepage Pat Conroy's Bio Pat Conroy's Books Biography/Background Pat Conroy was born on October 26, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, to a young career military officer from Chicago and a Southern beauty from Alabama, whom Pat often credits for his love of language. He was the first of seven children. Since the family had to move many times to different military bases around the South, Pat changed schools frequently, finally attending the Citadel Military Academy in Charleston, South Carolina, upon his father's insistence. While still a student, he wrote and then published his first book, The Boo, a tribute to a beloved teacher. After graduation, Conroy taught English in Beaufort, where he met and married a young woman with two children, a widow of the Vietnam War. He then accepted a job teaching underprivileged children in a one-room schoolhouse on Daufuskie Island, a remote island off the South Carolina shore. After a year, Pat was fired for his unconventional teaching practicessuch as his unwillingness to allow corporal punishment of his studentsand for his general lack of respect for the school's administration. The next campaign for some military veterans is for the classroom. The South Carolina Troops-to-Teachers Coalition, a statewide group headquartered at Clemson University, is launching a pilot program to offer substantive help to soldiers who may consider teaching as a post-military career. The group plans to expand the program nationally next year. The coalition will provide advice, coursework, training and field experience that will lead to certification and placement, according to Nancy C. Dunlap, project leader and associate director of the school of education at Clemson. University faculty will develop a curriculum based on what teachers need to know and do to become successful teachers. And prospective teachers will work in paid internships with mentor teachers. The program is directed especially to commissioned and non-commissioned officers with a bachelor's degree or higher. "Military personnel represent a wealth of talent, experience, diversity, knowledge, expertise, skills, and world view," Dunlap said. The new recruits can help close the gap in an expected teacher shortage, especially at rural and inner-city schools, she said. And they will provide more of what schools are now missing: black, Hispanic, and male teachers. They would be mature, physically fit and drug-free role models for youngsters.

Exemplary Practices in Teacher Recruitment South Carolina The South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment (SCCTR) is the oldest and most effective teacher recruitment center in the nation. It began as a center that piloted a Teacher Cadet Program in four high schools and now operates 12 programs aimed at identifying, attracting, placing and retaining well-qualified teachers in South Carolina classrooms. The SCCTR also assists state and local leaders in addressing the issue of teacher recruitment and retention. State leadership for career/technical education in South Carolina is working with the SCCTR staff to make career/technical teachers a target group and to develop a strategy for these teachers. South Carolina is anticipating hiring as many as 250 career/technical teachers over the next four years. The SCCTR target groups are middle and high school students, college students and adults. The Center provides these major programs: Minority Recruitment — This program offers activities to increase the number of minorities entering education. "I hear all these (people) saying they’re going to surrender. I’m going to tell you this — you go tell (Tennessee coach) Phillip Fulmer he’s got until Wednesday to vacate that job up there. I wonder how you get that done." Holtz has plenty of experience to draw upon when talking to his team about war. He was an assistant coach at various schools throughout most of the Vietnam War, and served as head coach at N.C. State from 1972-72, which were the final years of the war. "In 1968, we had a great football team (at Ohio State) ? and I remember we went up to Wisconsin, and I’ll never forget, the students had taken over the administration building," Holtz said. "There was a big riot and everything else. The same thing was happening at Ohio State to a certain extent. But it was a very turbulent time." Holtz served as an military reservist and in May of 2001, he participated in a six-day tour of the Middle East sponsored by the U.S.O. Holtz said he spoke to troops stationed in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
