high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
  • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
  • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
  • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
  • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Location The study of locations includes both exact and relative location. Latitude and Longitude is the way most people think about exact location. Relative location is a look at where the topic is in relation to other regions, countries, cities, or other physical features around it. Wilmington, NC, for example, is north of South Carolina, East of Tennessee, south of Virginia, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The human place includes an examination of a people's history, languages, religion, and social practices. The physical place includes climate, elevation, land forms and vegetation. Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] Settled by the English in 1670, South Carolina was based on a plantation culture with an aristocratic, wealthy society that was dependent on black slave labor. One of the original 13 colonies, South Carolina was first formed in 1729 when the Carolina colony was divided in two to form North and South Carolina. The attack on Fort Sumter in the Charleston harbor launched the Civil War. After the war, the structure of the state changed. Today, South Carolina is a growing research center and banking state. It is fitting that the state tree of the "Palmetto State" is the cabbage palmetto, which also appears on the state flag. The flower is the yellow jessamine, and the capital is Columbia. SOUTH CAROLINA, one of the South Atlantic states of the U.S., bordered on the N by North Carolina , on the E and SE by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the SW and W by Georgia . The Savannah R. forms almost all of the boundary with Georgia, and the Chattooga R. forms most of the rest. South Carolina entered the Union on May 23, 1788, as the eighth of the original 13 states. Its economy was agriculturally based until the 20th century, when manufacturing became the chief industry. In the early 1990s the state was a major producer of textiles. President Andrew Jackson was born in the border area between North Carolina and South Carolina, and Vice-President John C. Calhoun was born in South Carolina. The state is named for Charles I and Charles II of England; its nickname is the Palmetto State.
