Potential for Gold Discoveries
Production of gold was important in South Carolina during the 1800's and it is again contributing to the State's economic growth as a result of the opening of four gold mines (Brewer, Haile, Ridgeway, and Barite Hill) in the last decade. To support and help sustain this economic growth, the USGS has applied its geological and geochemical expertise to investigations of the gold deposits and their geologic setting in rocks of the Carolina slate belt ( fig. 1 ). These studies provide information to evaluate the potential for discovery of new deposits. Preliminary reports on issues of special interest for exploration, or that address environmental concerns, are released as soon as information is available. Florence, in the center of Pee Dee, used to be one of the major railroad hubs. Florence has gone on to become a bustling city with a healthy variety of industry in and around it and residential communities that are, in themselves, tourist attractions. But Florence is also a city of parks. Lake City and Kingstree to the south, Marion and Mullins to the east, Dalton, Darlington and Bennettsville to the north and Bishopville to the west all offer exquisite varieties of attractions ranging from tourable grand old homes and museums, through beautifully developed state parks to golf courses that attract golfers from all over the world. Race fans know all about Darlington Raceway and the NMPA Stock Car Hall of Fame located there.

    THE DEEP SOUTH
T he region of southern culturethe Deep South ( Map 7 : 33K)can be viewed as a geographic composite of beliefs, attitudes, patterns, habits, and institutions. Many of the early patterns and current changes are explicitly geographic; many others have geographic consequences. Strong differences exist within the South. The Gulf Coast, the southern highlands, the Georgia-Carolinas Piedmont, and many portions of the northern interior South each possess their own versions of southern culture. But they are also clear about the "southern-ness" they share. THE HERITAGE The earliest European colonization in America was commercial and exploitative. And the coastal plain south of Delaware Bay, especially that south of Chesapeake Bay, contained many areas that appeared ideal for agricultural exploitation. The long, hot summers, regular rainfall, and mild winters permitted settlers a selection of crops complementary to those grown in northern Europe. The large number of rivers that crossed the plain, navigable by small boats at least, allowed settlement to expand freely between the James River in Virginia and the Altamaha River in Georgia. Population densities remained low throughout most of the region, with urban concentrations larger than the village size limited to port cities (Norfolk, Virginia; Wilmington, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia) or the heads of navigation on the main rivers (Richmond, Virginia, and, later, Columbia, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia). The strong rural and agrarian elements of southern culture established a pattern that remained significant until after the mid-20th century.

For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
In addition to the Nation, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, PEP produces estimates for census regions and divisions, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, and metropolitan areas.
    Census Regions and Divisions
    Counties (and equivalents)
    Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.
