Although cases are reported in all age groups, young adults appear to be the most severely affected, and case-fatality rates approach 5%. Widespread panic begins because vaccine is not yet available and supplies of antiviral drugs are severely limited. Several weeks later, the CDC reports that H7N1 virus has been isolated from ill airline passengers arriving from Hong Kong and Tokyo in Los Angeles, Honolulu, Chicago and New York. States and local areas are asked to intensify influenza surveillance activities and vaccine manufacturers are requested to go into full production. Are you and others within your jurisdiction prepared?

South Carolina – A Unit Study This mini unit on SOUTH CAROLINA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academics subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study SOUTH CAROLINA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about SOUTH CAROLINA and enjoyable for all who are participating. South Carolina’s State Flag Asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety in the fall of 1775 to design a flag for the use of South Carolina troops, Col. William Moultrie chose a blue which matched the color of their uniforms and a crescent which reproduced the silver emblem worn on the front of their caps. The palmetto tree was added later to represent Moultrie's heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island against the attack of the British fleet on June 28, 1776. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.

South Carolina Today... L ooking at South Carolina’s flag, one might imagine a band of pirates sneaking ashore at night. Beneath a crescent moon they bury a chest full of treasure near a palm. Then they scurry across the beach to their waiting boat, disturbing a nesting sea turtle. It might have happened—who knows? Perhaps Captain Kidd’s legendary treasure rests under a South Carolina beach. A cruel pirate named Stede Bonnet was hanged in the port city of Charles Town, named for a British king. Later, American colonists grew tired of British rule and revolted. Today Charles Town is Charleston, one of South Carolina’s most beautiful cities. South Carolina’s state flag is a reminder that this is a coastal state. The sabal palmetto on the flag recalls a fort made of palmetto logs on Sullivan’s Island. The fort withstood bombardment by the British during the Revolutionary War. On the mainland is another symbol of sorts—Francis Marion National Forest. It is named for a Revolutionary War hero nicknamed the "Swamp Fox." South Carolina’s Coastal Plain, or "low country," certainly has plenty of swamps to hide in, including Congaree Swamp National Monument and Santee Swamp. It’s no wonder South Carolina’s nicknames include

And the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs General: * VA spent nearly $801 million in South Carolina in 2001 to serve more than 413,000 veterans who live in the state. Last year, 72,9981 South Carolina veterans received health care from VA and 61,051 veterans and survivors collected disability compensation or pensions. More than 7,029 veterans and their families received GI Bill payments for their education, 49,898 owned homes purchased through VA home loan guarantees and 624 were interred in Beaufort and Florence national cemeteries. Health Care: One of the most visible of all VA benefits is health care. VA has about 1,300 care facilities, including 163 hospitals, 859 ambulatory care and community-based outpatient clinics, 206 counseling centers, 137 nursing homes and 43 domiciliary facilities. Due to technology and changes in national and VA health care trends, VA has changed from a hospital-based system to a primarily outpatient-focused system over the past five years. With 27,000 fewer employees, VA provided care to one million more veterans across the country in 2001 than it did in 1995. Patient Safety: Geriatric Care: Research: Disabilities and Pensions: Not all of the problems of military service end when people are discharged from active duty. About 2.3 million veterans receive monthly VA disability compensation for medical problems related to their service in uniform. VA pensions go to about 345,000 wartime veterans with limited means. Family members of about 574,000 veterans qualify for monthly VA payments as the survivors of disabled veterans or pension recipients.

    REVISED
A Guide to Native American Studies Programs
in the United States and Canada
    Robert M. Nelson, Editor
Eight years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites. Our dream was to provide a comprehensive survey of U.S. and Canadian Native American Studies programs being offered as majors, minors, and certifications at the baccalaureate level or above, using (with some slight modifications and additions) Professor Ballinger's earlier categories of information on each program. And although we have made a considerable effort to locate, contact, and acquire information about Native American Studies programs (by whatever title: Native American Studies and American Indian Studies are the most common designations, though there are others) at all North American baccalaureate-granting institutions, readers should keep in mind that the
