82. Diary Of My Trip To South America

http://www.geocities.com/mlafren/sa97txt.html
SUN. 8 june 1997. Mtl-Houston-Panama City-Quito.
Up at 4 to go to the airport. More then 3 hours wait in Houston, ate my cheese sandwich. It took a while to get my boarding pass, the plane was overbooked. I sat beside a young man (17 years old) Pablo, who was going to visit family in Quito. We talked, he was very nice. Long trip, we couldn't move the back of our seats in our row. We stopped in Panama City for a short time. It was sunset, we could see the lights and highrises but the canal was on the other side. Finally in Quito after 9 PM, cool but not cold. I was very happy to see Janet with a sign with my name on it. Her son Francisco and her sister Nancy were there also. About 15 minutes in their old car to the house behind walls, Yolanda their mom had to come out to open the gates. We talked for a short while, Nancy showed me how to operate the electric shower, I drank a fresh juice. Went to bed, I'm exhausted and I've had an upset stomach all day, nerves.

Mendoza
Mendoza
Esquel - Chubut
Ushuaia - Tierra del Fuego
The ski season in Argentina starts in July, reaches its peak in August and finishes at the end of September.
All ski resorts located on the Argentine side of the Andes, from Mendoza to Tierra del Fuego, have slopes indicated for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. The larger differences being in the advanced, with a wider variety of designs and of course more difficulty due to the layout. Los Penitentes is another resort in Mendoza, where beginners can try to acquire experience at the base of the mountain, for the tracks are designed close to the buildings that form its structure. The province of Neuquen has a portion of the Andes where valleys run east to west, with a tendency to narrowing. There the weather is more humid due to the presence of the great lakes and the vegetation is more exuberant. The tracks go through deep green forests that splash the snow. Chapelco has excellent and well looked after slopes, with a complete infrastructure that includes services in the mountains and good access from the cities. The area located next to the Graef shelter is appropriate for a risk-free descent. You can get there by cablecar. It is ideal for beginners for it has a series of gentle slopes.

Listen for the rhythmic grinding of mano on metate as corn is turned to flour. Turkeys cackle in a pen while dogs bark. Children laugh as they play among the rocks. The soft song of a potter at work is interrupted by the shouts of a returning hunting party carrying a bighorn sheep. The sharp pecking sound you hear may be an artist or shaman carving a new petroglyph. In 1904 the bridges were known by different names. Owachomo, Sipapu, and Kachina had been named, respectively, Edwin, Augusta, and Caroline, after early explorers or their relatives. In 1909 President William Howard Taft enlarged the boundaries and affixed the Indian names, which are Hopi. They are not the names of the Paiute or Navajo Indians who lived near here in historic times. The Paiutes had no names for individual bridges, but called them all"Ma-Vah-Talk-Tump," meaning "under the horse's belly." The names were probably chosen from the Hopi, rather than the Navajo, because the Hopi were found living in structures similar to the prehistoric cliff dwellings of the Anasazi culture found in the park. Owachomo, meaning "rock mounds," is named for the large rounded rock mass found near the mesa. Sipapu, means "the place of emergence" in Hopi Indian legends. Prehistoric pictographs found here resembled kachinas, dancers, and so the youngest bridge got its name.
