Self Check Quiz Chapter 21: South Africa and Its Neighbors The Republic of South Africa is located at the southern end of the African continent. It is the most developed country in Africa. South Africa is the world's largest producer and exporter of gold. There are also large deposits of other mineral resources. In 1994 South Africa held its first democratic elections in which people from all ethnic groups could vote. Angola and Namibia have long coastlines on the Atlantic Ocean. The Namib Desert runs along the coast of both countries. Most of Angola's people are farmers. The country's major export, however, is oil. Namibia has rich mineral deposits. Unfortunately, most of Namibia's people continue to live in poverty. The Zambezi River flows across the country of Zambia. Zambia also has large deposits of copper. Zimbabwe takes its name from an ancient African city and trading center: Great Zimbabwe. Botswana lies in the center of southern Africa. The Kalahari Desert spreads over the southwestern part of the country.

Safari . The word simply means "travel" in Swahili, but for many, it alludes to wonders first envisioned in childhood: sweeping savannas, big snarling cats, thundering herds of elephant and wildebeest. Like its meaning, the word roams the imagination, becoming other words and places, like serengeti, sahara , or Kilimanjaro . Safari crosses the landscape of the mind, until it finally merges with the name of the great continent itself, Africa. Geographia invites our readers to explore all the traditional African safari destinations, but the game parks and wildlife reserves are only the beginning of the adventure. The second largest continent on Earth, Africa contains more countries than any other. With a history of human habitation that begins with the oldest known ancestors of man, the continent's cultural wealth easily matches its natural attractions. Empires rose and fell in Africa thousands of years before the European powers began their protracted exploitation of the continent, and much pre-colonial culture remains intact.

After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

Preamble: The University of Port Elizabeth is a relatively small institution with approximately 5000 students. Of these approximately 250 are enrolled for courses in the Department of Geography, in which the medium of instruction is English. The Department offers courses in the Arts, Science, Economic Sciences, Health Sciences and education faculties, at undergraduate level, and in the Arts and Economic Sciences faculties at postgraduate level (Go to the Course Page . In general, Geography classes are small, making staff-student contact more direct than is possible in many larger institutions. Consequently, through personal contact and discussion it is possible to overcome many problems in their initial stages. The city of Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape provide a varied and interesting environment for geographical teaching and research in both the physical and human sectors. Thus fieldwork in the immediate urban environment and further afield plays an important part in the Geography programme. Although the University of Port Elizabeth is only 30 years old it has the facilities offered by many older institutions and in some respects has more complete collections, notably in the library. The Department has its own computer terminals and access to the facilities of the University Computing Centre and the Geographical Information Systems laboratory
