THE LAND Geography T he Republic of South Africa occupies the southernmost part of the African continent stretching from the Limpopo river in the north, to Cape Agulhas in the south. Covering an area of 1,221,000 sq. km, the country shares borders with Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe in the north, and with Swaziland and Mozambique in the north east. To the west, south and east, South Africa borders on the Atlantic and southern Indian oceans. The country's coastline covers some 2,968 kilometres. Lying 1,920 kilometres south east of Cape Town in the Atlantic Ocean are the isolated Prince Edward and Marion islands, which were annexed by South Africa in 1947. Climate Summer in South Africa is from October until March and temperatures average between 15 degrees Celsius at night and 35 degrees Celsius at noon. Winter is from April to September with temperatures ranging from degrees Celsius or less at night to 20 degrees Celsius at midday. Despite regional differences, South Africa's climate is generally mild throughout the year. Snowfall is limited to the highest mountain peaks. South Africa is a semi-arid country with a mean annual rainfall of 464mm per annum compared to the world average of 857mm per annum. People and History Modern humans have lived in South Africa for more than 100,000 years. The small, mobile bands of Stone Age hunter-gatherers were the ancestors of the Khoe and San people. The first waves of Bantu-speaking cultivators began arriving in Southern Africa around 2,000 years ago, bringing with them an Iron Age culture, farming skills and domesticated crops. Having established themselves in the better-watered areas in the eastern parts of the country, they spread out across the highveld some 1,000 years ago, having adopted a more extensive cattle culture.

Latitudes 22 degrees S to 33 degrees S Longitudes 17 degrees E to 33 degrees E AREA 1.288 Million Sq Km MAIN GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS There are four major geographical regions: the Coastal Belt between the escarpment and the sea; the Little Karoo, a narrow tableland separated from the Coastal Belt by the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountains; the Great Karoo, separated from the Little Karoo by the Swartberg and Surberg mountains; and the Highveld comprising the nortern Cape, the Orange Free State and part of Natal together with most of the Transvaal. The coastline is 3,000 km in extent and is washed by two oceans, the Atlantic in the west and the Indian in the south and east. Two major current systems, the warm Mozambique in the east and south and the cold Benguela in the west, flow along the country's shores. CLIMATE South Africa enjoys a generally temperate climate, though weather patterns and rainfall statistics vary widely. While the Western Cape has mediterranean-type winter rains and the rainfall on other coastal areas are spread throughout the year, 80% of the country's annual rainfall happens during the summer months (from October to March), much of it is accompanied by hail and thunder-storms.

Geography 608: South Africa: Society and Space Instructor: Kevin R. Cox Geography 608 (South Africa: Society and Space) focuses on a country where so much that is central to our understanding of societies in the late twentieth century comes together. Furthermore the outcomes of that combination of social processses racism, capitalist development, colonialism, territorialization assume exaggerated forms. These make it a particular useful instance in understanding those processes. These processes have produced very distinctive geographies: geographies of intense racial segregation, of displaced urbanization, and of markedly uneven development, as between so-called 'white' South Africa and the black Homelands. Geography has been mobilized to achieve white domination and to facilitate capitalist domination of the country's working class, both white and black. It has also been mobilized by black liberation movements in their attempts to overthrow successive white regimes. It is therefore a graphic instantiation of the interrelations of society and space and how difficult it is to study one without the other. The social processes that have made South Africa socio- spatially include: imperialism; colonialism; racism; nationalism; the displacement of pre-capitalist by capitalist forms of production; conflicts between mining, manufacturing and agriculture; decolonization; and the emancipation of black peoples. These have deep historical roots. Consequently much of this course has an historical emphasis. A good deal of time, for example, will be devoted to an understanding of apartheid (1948-1989) and to its antecedents. The era of a post-apartheid South Africa is now heralded but it will be a very long time before the country throws off its peculiar historical and geographical heritage, if ever.

Geography has traditionally pulled in two different directions: on the one hand - physical geography - towards the study of the natural environment and on the other hand - human geography - towards the study of people and their activities. The scope of Human Geography has expanded considerably in recent decades to include all those aspects of geography not directly concerned with the physical environment, nor with technical matters in such sub-fields as cartography. This umbrella term includes economic geography, political geography, cultural geography, urban geography, medical geography and development geography. Within the School of Geography at the University of Leeds we also have a number of teaching programmes for undergraduate and postgraduates.
