The key word here is fixed. website. For each PA Form submitted, there is a $30 registration fee required. If you only register one song at a time, this procedure can get very expensive - especially if you are an obsessive-compulsive, prolific songwriter. However, there is a cheaper way! You can wait until you have several songs ready for registration and then register them as a "collection." The collection can contain any number of songs (my last submission had over 20) and it will still cost only $30 to register. I simply call my collections The Songs of Mary Dawson - Volume 1 (or Volume 2…or Volume 3…or whatever). You will need to send your completed PA form along with copies of the lyric and/or lead sheets for each song and/or a cassette or CD demo of the songs in the submission.
It takes several months for the registration procedure to be completed, If you are a singer/songwriter who decides to record an album of your own songs If you can digest most of the above information, you will have a basic working knowledge CHECK BACK FOR UPCOMING ARTICLES...

We dealt in our last column with the way live performing can affect your songwriting. In this article we will talk about what playing live does for your performance skills. Much needs to be done in preparing to perform, getting your songs in shape, rehearsing, learning how to plan a set list, etc., but there are things you learn from performing that are impossible to learn otherwise. So what will you learn from live performing that you won't learn in rehearsal?

The reason is to make up for time lost, when due to a dire lack of organizational funds, the group had to defer its annual awards for an entire year. To speed things right along, the 8th Katha Awards has already kicked off, covering all recorded original compositions by Filipino songwriters released from

Windrift Songwriting Competition 2002 Winners Bio's 2002 Competition – Short Bio’s Jennifer Marks The first of our two Overall Grand Prize Winners is New York native Jennifer Marks. A highly acclaimed artist throughout the New York City area, Jennifer has won many awards, including being chosen as one of the finalists in last years Windrift Music Songwriting Competition. With her own style, landing somewhere between pure pop and acoustic rock, Jennifer’s songs are subtle, sophisticated, sexy and smart, incorporating dark, acoustic strums bursting into distorted, soaring musings of self-introspection. ‘Not only does Marks have great songs, but she knows how to throw ‘em at you’. Jennifer has just released her latest CD on her own label, Red Kurl Records, which demonstrates her highly developed wit and originality. Jennifer Marks is one of NYC’s better-kept secrets, and the only direction she is moving is up. Quinton Stephenson This year’s other Overall Grand Prize winner is Las Vegas based commercial painter Quinton Stephenson. While in high school, Quinton played in garage bands, and toured the Vegas scene playing in bars, back yards, and even in the middle of the desert when asked. Now, Quinton plays as part of a trio of musical tradesmen, along with a fish tank cleaner and a pest controller, and has been recognized with many musical awards. With a portfolio of well over 80 songs, all displaying a broad range of musical styles, Quinton plays like he was born with a guitar in his hands. These days, he concentrates mainly on writing and producing songs from his home studio, with his ultimate goal being to write songs for professional artists. Quinton has a song in his heart. He writes, he composes, he sings like a pro and he loves doing it. He’s a man with a soul for music.

    The Performing Songwriter - May/June 1996
Natalie Merchant: The Mission of Music
by: Holly Crenshaw, pages 28-31 Natalie Merchant describes the songs she wrote with 10,000 Maniacs as being tinged with nostalgia, a reflection of the life she knew growing up in Jamestown, New York. "In retrospect I can see that I was trying to write about what I knew: small-town rural America," says Merchant. "That's where I'd lived my whole life. I wrote stories and ballads about the people I knew and the circumstances they lived in. I understood what it felt like to be neglected in the fanfare of history." Using her music to illuminate the lives of the forgotten or unfairly treated has long been an important mission for Merchant, who joined the folk/rock band when she was only 17 but soon evolved into its driving artistic force. From an early interest in a broad range of protest music - from Bob Dylan to the Gang of Four - Merchant grew into a socially conscious lyricist and mesmerizing singer who recorded six albums on Elektra with 10,000 Maniacs - from their major label debut, Wishing Chair , to their final collection of new material, Our Time In Eden After giving her bandmates two years' warning, she announced her departure from the group following the release of one of its biggest sellers

    http://lowryolafson.com/bio.html
Lowry Olafson, Vancouver-based singer, songwriter, violin and guitar player, has toured throughout Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and Iceland, playing concert stages, festivals, folk clubs, and house concerts. The qualities that set Lowry Olafson apart from other songwriters are his smooth, calming performance style, his engaging melodies, and the way his songs hit home and move his audience to identify with other people's experiences. Add Lowry's captivating violin compositions to the mix, and you'll see why his concerts are both uplifting and entertaining. Lowry was born in Lahore, Pakistan, to a father who worked with the UN and a mother who taught piano. He began playing piano at age 5, violin at age 9, guitar and songwriting at age 11. His early musical activities included studying classical violin and singing everything from folk to operetta. Lowry supplemented his early musical career with a variety of work all across Canada. A tour of Southern Europe and Southeast Asia turned into four years in Australia, where his numerous colourful experiences added fuel for his unique stories and songs. Lowry remained in Perth for several years, where he played guitar, fiddle, and mandolin for a variety of bands, ranging from folk and country to a weird sci-fi band. He also renewed studies in violin and music composition. Lowry moved back to Canada in 1982 but continued his international touring at such events as the 1985 Australian National Folk Festival and venues like the Hong Kong Folk Club. From 1987-90, Lowry took a performing hiatus and opened a White Rock clothing store and cappuccino bar called Silly Sisters with his former wife. The popular Sunday music sessions Lowry created there enticed him to perform the songs that would later appear on his first album
