Stringing together a dream
Beaverlodge native Mark Stonehocker didn't fret about trading his circuits for c-strings
Story and photos by Diana Rinne
He may not be able to fly, but Mark Stonehocker literally floats when he talks about his music and his future.
"It's been a really good year. So many things are working out right now. Doors are opening ..." smiles the Beaverlodge-born alternative-rock artist.
Since the release of his independent album "None of Us Can Fly" in August of last year, Stonehocker has immersed himself in the business of making music. After two years of studying computers at Grande Prairie Regional College, he made the switch to the Interactive Digital Design Program majoring in music last year and hasn't looked back since. "I have improved so much since last year," he said.
Though he has been writing lyrics since he was a kid, Stonehocker only took up the guitar and songwriting during his first year of college. He started a Christian band, One Way, during that year and continued to perform as a solo artist after the band broke up.
He hit the local music scene with the debut of his song "Circle of Rain" on Sun FM in January of '97. From there it was on to produce "None of Us Can Fly" last August. "It started as something I did so I could give my songs to my friends," he said. Local radio airplay of the album has made Stonehocker a relatively well-known name in the alternative-rock scene in Grande Prairie.

In this inaugural year of the Breakthrough Award, it was decided to give two awards, reflecting the extraordinary breadth of rising songwriting talent in our midst.
With the demise of Savage Garden, Daniel Jones had made contact with Waite to see where she was up to with her own work. He got together with her and Wallis and decided he not only wanted to help them write, he wanted to become their publisher. A year later Aneiki has had a major hit single, recorded an album in Sweden, and won the inaugural APRA Breakthrough Songwriter award.
Her profile is bigger in the UK than her home country of Australia, but Sia Furler, known primarily by her first name, made such a major impression on the APRA Board of Directors that acknowledgement for her songwriting was viewed as imperative.

As much as I like performing, I love the creative encouraging people to try the processof songwriting, you may What comes first , the melody or the lyrics?
http://www.conniekaldor.com/all_about/music/song_texte.html
Songwriting Where do you get your ideas? I think for starters it is best to work from what you know and that can be what you know about the human condition, yourself or your country or your dog. I write all the time. I get ideas in all sorts of situations, driving, drinking tea , anywhere. I usually try to have a piece of paper around and ideally I have my small tape recorder and just sing it onto tape. There is something to be said for just sitting and playing and letting your ideas come to you. I think that boredom has also been quite a creative force. Why practice an old song when you can write a new one? What comes first , the melody or the lyrics? It can be either. What often comes first is the rhythm of a melody or the rhythm of a series of words. That seems to get me down the path to a song. I love the rhythm of language. I sometimes make up a melody, just for an exercise. I am quite lyric oriented, most times. I often write a song with lyrics and melody, and then I forget about it and weeks later, I come back and find the lyrics but have long forgotten the melody. I then write another melody to the rhythm of the existing lyrics. Have you studied songwriting?

Author Topic: The Use Of Lyrics BillC posted 01-28-2002 03:32 PM ET (US) I have written a rather simple Christmas song that got some attention this last season...sung by a local chior, lots of good feedback etc. I would like to submit it for publisher consideration but I have what may be a problem. In the lyrics I intentially use some "Silent Night" lyrics. They are set to a different melody and are an intregal part of the song. They are used as a backdrop to a non-Christmas mood. My question relates to, how do/where do I find out if I can legally use those lyrics in my song. Or what do I have to do to be legal? I really am interested in overall how does one find out "public domain" or whose permission etc. In cases like this? Thanks. ed nelson posted 02-03-2002 05:57 PM ET (US)

Updated 2002/10/27 "Petrosneef" is the songwriting team of Seth "Sneef" Mitchell This site has finally been updated with completed produced version of 11 songs! Seth has done a fantastic job of performing and mixing all parts. The quality is unbelievable. Seth is a professional musician who has had the privilege of accompanying The Michael Schenker Group Jason Mitchell ) album, Cosmic Trigger from Universal Freddie Duran , and various other gigs, and Jason's done a gig as bassist with The Great Gig In The Sky (a kickass Pink Floyd cover band - an appearance at Bash On Ash in November 2000). Seth also teaches keyboards and guitar (his wife teaches voice and keys), and he does all of the finished production and performances here (the demos are recorded by me). Following are some of our songs. They are complete, and 11 of them are high quality productions - the others, aside from the roughness of the performance, are of good quality. They're roughly 1 - 4MB apiece, give or take. Mike Petro Spark - A classic, a masterpiece! (If I do say so myself).

Elaine Lachica: Genre-busting through Contrary Motion
Carried away amidst the lulling folds of Elaine Lachica's deep, soulful chants, I felt the urge to draw a hot bath, dim the lights, and disappear amidst bubbles and dreams... Elaine's music is unlike anything I've ever heard or experienced, and it came as a pleasant surprise. She emailed me a few days prior, and I encouraged her to send me her media kit and CD for review. Nothing about our correspondence suggested that I should expect the unorthodox, so I guessed that Elaine would be like the rest of 'em - another indie-pop voice with guitar accompaniment, delivering angst-ridden lyrics about boys, the blues, and other banalities. On the contrary, Elaine has constructed her own creative category. She has been hailed a "multi-dimensional" artist, who embraces the challenge of integrating various aspects of musicmaking. Elaine's new CD, "9", envelopes listeners in a fantastic world of eclectic rhythms, sounds, and lyrics. One spin of the disc and I, for one, wanted to know more. 9 Questions for Elaine Lachica: YG: When and how did you become interested in music - singing, songwriting, performing, etc.? Do you take after anyone in the Lachica family?

To Peter Mulvey, there is no such thing as a straight and narrow path. At least, not one that he has any interest in taking.
A live-wire on any stage, Peter Mulvey is an acoustic singer/songwriter/guitarist who, in fact, defies this categorization. His ferocious guitar playing whisks him through more tunings than he has fingers in the course of an evening, as he winds his way from full-throated rockers to deceptively plain-spoken musings. Whether solo or with longtime musical collaborator David "Goody" Goodrich at his side (coaxing unearthly sounds out of electric guitars and mandolins), Mulvey is someone who just naturally commands a stage:
"Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear… utterly original… it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated… his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain… one of the finest, most complete entertainers… stunning." - THE IRISH EXAMINER
Peter Mulvey's story is pretty simple. College graduate from Milwaukee moves to Ireland in the early nineties, with guitar, and busks on the streets of Dublin. Hears that acoustic music is booming in Boston, comes back the U.S., and, in between the occasional paying gig, plays in the subway to make rent. Wins the prestigious Acoustic Underground Competition and awes both the audience and the press:
