Arousal Disasters (Aporia Records), according to Toronto-based Jonathan Seet, is a collection of vignettes of what occurs to us when our desire consumes us our emotions can liberate or destroy us. While the songs explore some deep dark erotic corners, they also touch on desire and lust in a more general context. Although Seet performed, produced and mixed most of Arousal Disasters he wasn't flying solo on the entire project. He enlisted the talents of many local artists; Dennis Mohammed (Wild Strawberries) on bass, Rob Greenway (Brilliantfish, Amanda Marshall) on drums and percussion, Lisa MacIsaac (Mad Violet) on violin, Rachel Smith on backing vocals and lead on "14 Candles," as well as Tanisha Taitt on backing vocals for "Nasty Little Boys." Ray Montford (Look People, Andy Stochansky) engineered and recorded the bed tracks.

9) SONGS AND SONGWRITING
9.1 What is known about Paul's songwriting method? In the early days of the Beatles, Paul and John did not have a portable tape recorder with which to record their ideas for songs. Since they could not read or write musical notation, they could not write their songs down either, and so they had to rely on their memory. At the time, they felt that this was an advantage if they could not remember the song the next day, they reckoned that it must not have been very memorable. When they composed in the early years of the Beatles, they would frequently sit opposite each-other, each with an acoustic guitar. They found Paul's left-handedness an asset, because when they faced each other, the necks of their guitars would both stick out in the same direction, as if looking in a mirror, and it was very easy to copy the chords the other was playing. One idea-generating process was to sit and strum chords at each-other until an idea came, a process Paul would use again much later when writing with Declan MacManus (Elvis Costello). In the later years of the Beatles, the nature of Paul and John's collaboration changed. One or the other would have an initial idea a tune and a verse perhaps and then they would get together to complete the song.

He also became the first non-musician to ever win the songwriting competition.
"Numerous experienced songwriters and composers from bands to singer-songwriters enter the event. Yet, Alex, a non-musician, beat the experienced songwriters who have been honing their craft for years! Mr. O'Brien is a inspiration to all poets and lyricist. He is a living proof that you do not need to be a musician to write a good lyric", Lee Lyndes, president of the USA Songwriting Competition. In contrast, the 1999 USA Songwriting Competition's first prize in the lyrics category went to Berklee College of Music graduate Adrianne Gonzalez who was a Classically trained musician, well trained songwriter and as well as a gigging performer.
Alex took a year leave of absence from his job as a director of human resources at a hospital in Ontario to fulfill his lifelong dream to write. That leave of absence paid off as he wrote numerous lyrics, a book of poetry, completed four plays and won the songwriting competition. "This is my first win in any writing or songwriting competition. It feels good to know that one's work is respected by professionals in the business, and it provides great encouragement to keep on writing. I'm still walking on air!" said Alex O'Brien.

Conventional wisdom in the world these days says "NEVER give away freely what you can sell and make money on". I believe that we can be slightly more civilized than this - help me prove it. As the publishers of such songs have already made money from royalties from sales of my recordings, I do quite strongly object to having to omit them. The only thing any publisher ever did for me was to register my work with PRS and MCPS then sit back and take 50% of my earnings. I have never had a publisher promote a single song of mine, I have never had a publisher make any contribution to my songwriting or performing, or even use the profit they made from me to help promote someone else's work. So far as I can see, their only interest is in raking off money and to hear them use the argument that people putting lyrics on websites are ripping off songwriters is utterly nausea-inducing. But such is life in a world where nothing has worth other than as property and a means of extracting profit. let me know and I will remove it immediately.

E S I t was Steve's brother who got him his first real gig, with a trad jazz band. "We needed a piano player, so I brought Steve along, " Muff Winwood recalls. "He was only 11, but he played everything perfectly. They stood with their mouths open. Because he was underage, we had to get him long trousers to make him look older, and even then we'd sneak him in through the pub kitchens. He'd play hidden behind the piano so nobody would know." B y the time Steve was 16, he was no longer concealed from the audience, but fronting The Spencer Davis Group on the now classic songs he wrote such as "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man". With a record deal, TV appearances, hit singles on both sides of the ocean, and a tour supporting The Rolling Stones, the teen prodigy was getting his first taste of stardom. But it was the music, not the fame that mattered most to Winwood, and when he felt growing pains ("I got tired of just copying blues records"), he found solace in after-hours jam sessions with his friends Dave mason, Chris Woo, and Jim Capaldi.

55. Compass Records: Pierce Pettis

http://www.compassrecords.com/pettis.htm
We bring you the best in new music from around the world.
Pierce Pettis A writer above all else, Pierce Pettis pens insightful and evocative lyrics that are alternately beautiful, humorous, and haunting all wrapped in Southern mystique. The lyrics are equally matched by powerful and original melodies that highlight Pettis' ability to balance his passionate, edgy vocal and guitar style with a gentle intimacy. State of Grace, his third album on Compass Records after three on Windham Hill/High Street, is a rootsy and intimately produced affair with Pettis's incomparable songwriting and musicianship front and center. Better than any of his previous albums, State of Grace captures the raw emotion and energy of one of Pettis's live performances. That coupled with a stellar collection of songs, many of which are destined to become classics in the genre, make the album Pettis's strongest to date.
The collection of songs on State of Grace grew out of Pettis's lifelong conversation with his own Southern heritage and is very much a homecoming. Yet the songs go beyond being simply a study of the American South. While the setting of most of the songs is uniquely Southern, the themes are more universal and the music is pure Americana ranging from rhythm and blues to bluegrass, Appalachian gospel to down and dirty rock and roll. Pettis does explore various facets of Southern life, the rural joys as well as the legacy of tension and the sometimes comic, sometimes tragic contradictions but without resorting to the usual cliches and sentimentality. Above all, Pettis says, "the album is peppered with hope."

THOM MOORE, the celebrated songwriting author of a multitude of songs the likes of Carolina Rua, The Scholar, Saw You Running, Still Believing, and Cavan Girl, returns to active gigging in Ireland in the company of two friends of his, the wonderful Julie Searles and Matthew Allen, the New England songwriting-performing duo who will be teaching World Music at UC Cork this spring and generally spreading their gospel of Brazilian-influenced songs throughout the country while here. THOM first met them while he was back in Los Angeles in the 80's and fell in love with their "bossa-nova guitar + two vocals stylings" during their sojourn in California, which had them performing together up and down the coast. Since that time THOM went on to work in Russia, first on the INF Treaty and then as an English professor, while Matthew and Julie pursued academic careers in music, all of them gaining insight and new music along the way. The opportunity to hear them together should not be missed, as a splendid introduction to truly alternative World-influenced American music.
In 1999 Julie and Matthew returned to New England to join the faculty at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. In Spring 2002 they are living in Cork while Matthew teaches music at UCC on a Fulbright fellowship. Their current performance repertoire includes folk-oriented and Latin-influenced original compositions, jazz standards, Brazilian bossa novas and sambas.

Songwriting Tip - Try a Bridge
by Robert Childs
Beginning songwriters can sometimes make a song more interesting by adding a Bridge. The bridge can change the mood and direction of a song for a few bars before returning to the main melody line and theme. A well known example of a song with a bridge is The Beatles I Wanna Hold Your Hand . Notice how the bridge (beginning "And when I touch you I feel happy inside ....") briefly changes the mood of the song. The Path of the Song:
Deconstructing the
Songwriting Process
By Amanda Garrigues I have to be honest. I procrastinated for days, even weeks in writing this article. I had no outline, no focus and certainly no inspiration. Ideas buzzed around me like hungry mosquitoes, but I never made the time to actually begin writing . I often approach songwriting like I approached this article: reluctantly. Usually I avoid songwriting at all costs until I become so bored with my life, I succumb to the muse. I know some of you songwriters out there can relate.
Songwriting, like any creative process, can be very elusive, but when the "juices are flowing," it can be magical. Keep in mind that "songwriting" is a broad topic, and every artist has his or her own songwriting conventions. The concepts that follow are what I believe to be general struggles songwriters face with some helpful hints along the way.
