1. Build A Solar System

  • Fill in the diameter of the Sun you want your model to be scaled by. You can fill in either the red bordered inches box or the green bordered millimeters box. Important: Only fill in one box. If both are filled in you will get a dialog box asking you to clear one of the boxes. Use the Clear button to clear the entire form.
  • Click on the "Calculate" button.
  • Notice that the distances and sizes of the planets will automatically fill in. I've also provided some other interesting scale comparisons at the bottom of the chart.
  • You can now build your scale model. You can do this with a long tape measure, or you can measure the size of your pace and walk it off counting the number of steps you take. To mark a planet's place you can use a piece of paper on a post that you stick into the ground, or you can use a flag, or even a person. Be prepared for a long walk!
  • If you build your solar system on a roll of toilet paper, you can make the Sun about .4 inches (10 mm) across and still fit the entire solar system on the roll. A standard roll of toilet paper has about 450 sheets that are about 4.375 inches long, hence the roll is about 164 feet long. You should check your toilet paper for length. Some are longer.

    An Overview of the Solar System
    Basics
    T he solar system consists of the Sun ; the nine planets, over 100 satellites of the planets, a large number of small bodies (the comets and asteroids), and the interplanetary medium. (There are also many more planetary satellites that have been discovered but not yet been officially named.) The inner solar system contains the Sun, Mercury Venus Earth and Mars T he planets of the outer solar system are Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune and Pluto T he orbits of the planets are ellipses with the Sun at one focus, though all except Mercury and Pluto are very nearly circular. The orbits of the planets are all more or less in the same plane (called the ecliptic and defined by the plane of the Earth's orbit) . The ecliptic is inclined only 7 degrees from the plane of the Sun's equator. Pluto's orbit deviates the most from the plane of the ecliptic with an inclination of 17 degrees. The above diagrams show the relative sizes of the orbits of the nine planets from a perspective somewhat above the ecliptic (hence their non-circular appearance). They all orbit in the same direction (counter-clockwise looking down from above the Sun's north pole); all but Venus, Uranus and Pluto also rotate in that same sense. (The above diagrams show correct positions for October 1996 as generated by the excellent Macintosh program Starry Night ; there are also many other planetarium programs available.)

ABOUT THE DEEP SPACE NETWORK The NASA Deep Space Network - or DSN - is an international network of antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions and radio and radar astronomy observations for the exploration of the solar system and the universe. The network also supports selected Earth-orbiting missions. The DSN currently consists of three deep-space communications facilities placed approximately 120 degrees apart around the world: at Goldstone , in California's Mojave Desert; near Madrid, Spain; and near Canberra , Australia. This strategic placement permits constant observation of spacecraft as the Earth rotates, and helps to make the DSN the largest and most sensitive scientific telecommunications system in the world. NASA's scientific investigation of the Solar System is being accomplished mainly through the use of unmanned automated spacecraft. The DSN provides the vital two-way communications link that guides and controls these planetary explorers, and brings back the images and new scientific information they collect. All DSN antennas are steerable, high-gain, parabolic reflector antennas.

    Absolute Magnitude (H)
    The magnitude of an asteroid at zero phase angle and at unit heliocentric and geocentric distances. [2]
    Albedo
    Geometric albedo is the ratio of a body's brightness at zero phase angle to the brightness of a perfectly diffusing disk with the same position and apparent size as the body. [1]
    Asteroid
    An asteroid is a planetesimal in orbit around the sun. Generally, asteroids are rocky bodies concentrated in orbits between Mars and Jupiter. The largest known asteroid is 1 Ceres which is about 933 km (~580 mi) in diameter.
