From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

    With Amanda Smith
    Summary:

What’s hot and what’s not when it comes to which sports are in or out of the Olympic Games?
A recent report by the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee puts baseball, softball and modern pentathlon on the chopping block. The new favourites are golf and rugby.
So how are these decisions made – especially when no sport wants to be thrown out of the Olympics, and plenty of others reckon it’s their turn to be on the O-List? Details or Transcript: Amanda Smith: We’re starting The Sports Factor this morning with a question: What do the following sports have in common: cricket, croquet, motor-boating, polo and tug-of-war? MUSIC: ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ Amanda Smith: Yes, they’re all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if you’re one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, there’ve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. They’ve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

Prospects look good to keep baseball, softball, modern penathlon in Olympics By STEPHEN WILSON, Associated Press
MEXICO CITY (November 23, 2002 1:21 p.m. EST) - It's been 66 years since a sport was eliminated from the Olympics. Don't expect any changes when Olympic leaders meet starting Monday to consider dropping three sports at once.
Three months after baseball, softball and modern pentathlon were proposed for exclusion after the 2004 Athens Games, it looks increasingly unlikely that the International Olympic Committee will vote them out.
There might not even be a vote when the IOC meets through Friday in Mexico City.
A combination of factors - legal and technical complaints about the voting process, a successful lobbying campaign by the endangered federations and a lack of enthusiasm for change - appears to have ensured the sports' Olympic survival.
    For now, at least.
"I think they will be able to save their skin," said Denis Oswald, a member of the IOC executive board and head of the association representing all summer Olympic sports.
IOC president Jacques Rogge said all options are open, including scrapping the vote, postponing it until next year or changing the proposal to apply to the 2012 Olympics instead of 2008.

Don Porter, President of the International Softball Federation (ISF), commented today on the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Program Commission's recommendation to drop three sports from the 2008 Olympic program in Beijing, including softball. The Federation, the international governing body for the sport, also provided an analysis to complement those remarks, in testimony to the sport's place in the Olympics. "It's important to realize that this is only a recommendation, not a conclusion," Mr. Porter said. "We intend to continue our ongoing efforts to promote our sport and all its successes around the world so that everyone - the voting IOC members included - will see that our information shows this recommendation to be an uninformed one. I certainly question the train of thought behind taking out a women's sport, which is what the IOC has supported."

UNLV Olympic sports notebook: Rebel softball to tune up with game against alumni
    By Brian Hilderbrand
    bh@lasvegassun.com

LAS VEGAS SUN The UNLV softball team will look to its past in an attempt to help it prepare for the immediate future when the Rebels take on their alumni this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rebel Diamond. Rebels head coach Shan McDonald will use Saturday's alumni game to gauge where her team stands going into its Feb. 6 season opener against St. Mary's. "Because our season starts so soon ... if nothing else, (the game) gives us an opportunity to get on the field with our team and not play intrasquad games anymore and actually play against somebody," McDonald said. "We've got some pretty good alumni even though some of them aren't playing competitively anymore so it should be a pretty good test for us." Among the former Rebels expected to play for the alumni squad include Olympic gold medallist Lori Harrigan, Amy Stewart and Julie Crandall. Although the Rebels are coming off a 20-41 season in which they went 3-17 in Mountain West Conference play, McDonald said she expects UNLV to be more competitive this season.
