Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

Moguls became a medal event in 1992, when aerials and ballet were again demonstration events. In 1994, aerials were also added to the Winter Olympic program. Ballet, now known as acro, is still not a medal event.

    Norwegian makes Winter Olympic history

Bjorn Dahlie on his way to make Winter Olympic history Bjorn Daehlie became the first man ever to win six gold medals at the Winter Olympics when he won the 10-kilometer cross-country race. The Norwegian's triumph adds to the three golds he won at Albertville in 1992 and the two he collected at Lillehammer four years ago. Skiing in steady rain at the Snow Harp course, Daehlie crossed the finish line in 27 minutes 24.5 seconds while Austria's Markus Gandler, eight seconds slower, won the silver. Finland's Mika Myllylae, winner of the 30K race on Monday, collected the bronze in 27:40.1. Daehlie had a disaster in the 30k race on Monday, finishing in 20th after putting the wrong wax on his skis. However he got it right this time and led from the start. By the first checkpoint at 1.8 kilometers he was 6.3 seconds faster than the closest challenger in the 97-strong field and he never let that lead slip. In a fine show of sportsmanship, Daehlie postponed his celebrations until Philip Boit, the only Kenyan at the games, finished the course.

If he achieves that he will be the greatest Winter Olympian of all time.

    Chamonix, France
Site of the First Winter Games
By Susan Thomas Chamonix (pronounced Sham-oh-nee) is a quaint little town with the language and food of France, and the beauty and class of Switzerland. It was here that the early Olympic organizers decided to hold the very first Winter Games. An ice rink in the shadow of 15,000-foot Mont Blanc provided the setting for skating. A snow made bobsled run, which no longer exists, ran from part way up the mountain and into the town. And the skiing of course took place on the slopes where skiers flock every winter, 74 years later. At the time of the first Winter Games, a train moved people about half way up the mountain to the glacier, Mer de Glace. The train has been upgraded and it is still there for sightseeing. The Mer de Glace is an impressive, immense glacier that runs down the flanks of Mont Blanc almost touching the town of Chamonix. The glacier reaches down into the valley like a crooked old finger made of old snow and blue ice. It wasn't until 1955, 3 decades after those first games, that the Telepherique (tram) de l'Aiguille Du Midi (that's the high peak at the top, translated as the Needle of Noon) carried locals and tourists all the way to the top of the Mer de Glace. Now, that tram lures people from all over the world to Chamonix.
