84. Psychology Today: Do Animals Think?
A article by Clive Wynne that argues evidence from the ape sign language studies demonstrates that our closest animal relatives do not have consciousness.

Psychology Today Nov, 1999 Do Animals Think?
Author/s: Clive Wynne The case against the animal mind I was 13 when Benji came into our lives. With his deep brown eyes, floppy ears and cheerful disposition, he was my constant companion throughout my teen-age years. We would play together in the garden, and take long walks over the hills behind tile house and on the beach. Benji would hang on my every word with his head tilted to one side. Despite being a dog, he seemed to have a sympathy for my problems that went deeper than words could express. He was my best friend. Benji left us about 15 years ago for that great kennel in the sky. But recently I've been thinking about him a lot. Was he really conscious? Could any animal have consciousness like we do? Does it matter whether animals are conscious or not? For many, it is a matter of life and death. On the one hand, animal research has helped prevent some of the most pressing human diseases, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, "mad cow" disease, malaria, cystic fibrosis and emphysema. On the other hand, this research is performed largely on chimps, our closest nonhuman relatives, with whom we share 98.4% of our genetic material, and on the other great apes, with whom we are similarly biologically close. Some people feel this connection is strong enough to warrant special treatment. An international group called the Great Ape Project is pushing the government of New Zealand to adopt a bill that would give some human rights to chimpanzees, gorillas and the rest of the great apes. The Great Ape Project is lobbying the United Nations to adopt a declaration on the rights of great apes modeled on the UN declaration On the Rights of Man. The group believes that apes are "conscious" and so deserve legal protection of their right to life and freedom from imprisonment and torture.

A RESEARCH REPORT FROM SIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION WITH DOMESTIC ASIAN ELEPHANTS IN NORTHERN THAILAND, 1994.
A Potential Foundation For An Elephant / Internet Interface? A Potential Solution To The Elephant Problem?
INTRODUCTION
What are the potentials for communication with elephants? Where do elephants belong in the spectrum of species in communication with humans?
Many domestic Asian Elephants seem to have a continuously variable level of motivation. They seem to be constantly making judgements such as "How hungry am I now? How hard do I want to work for that bunch of bananas?" An observation often made by mahouts of domestic Asian elephants is that they are like children, that they lack initiative and altruism. They don't usually perform trained behaviors without the direction of a mahout and they almost never rescue a mahout from danger.
But are these characteristics much different from those of humans that have been enslaved?
Wild elephants show great initiative, altruism and cooperation in rescue and in many other areas of behavior. Orphaned elephants that have been raised by humans with kindness, sometimes show great friendship, initiative and altruism toward humans.
But in five thousand years of close association, why hasn't elephant to human symbolic communication progressed further? One reason might be that communication has been oriented to Human tasks and not to Elephant tasks.

02:00 AM Nov. 30, 2002 PT Signs, informing us that the airport is the second left or that feeding the tiger is not advised, are an everyday part of life. When those signs are in a foreign language, however, taking the wrong turn or losing a few fingers can become a real danger. A new gadget called the Sign Translator may take some of these hazards and confusion out of traveling abroad. It can automatically translate signs into English.

Here's how it works: The baffled tourist takes a digital photo of the sign with a camera built into his PDA, and the sign translator software detects the text within the image. In a matter of seconds, the text is translated into English. The current version of the Sign Translator is fluent in Chinese. It can translate more than 3,700 Chinese characters into English.

02:00 AM Jan. 28, 2002 PT Instant messaging has improved communications for the deaf so significantly it's been called a "godsend" by one. Now, a glove that can translate American Sign Language into text may improve communications even further. Eighteen-year-old Ryan Patterson designed a sign language translator glove that works by sensing the hand movements of the sign language alphabet , then wirelessly transmitting the data to a portable device that displays the text on-screen.

The high school senior, who is not deaf himself, built a prototype of the sign language translator using a leather golf glove with 10 sensors, a small circuit board containing a micro controller, analog-to-digital converter and a radio-frequency transmitter.
