THE CHIMPANZEE AND HUMAN COMMUNICATION INSTITUTE CHCI is a sanctuary for four adult chimpanzees who communicate with humans and each other using American Sign Language (ASL). The mission of CHCI is to protect and care for these Chimpanzees, educate the public on the endangered status of wild chimpanzees, help improve the lives of all captive chimpanzees through ongoing research, and serve as a humane research facility for students. CHCI is home for these chimpanzees and is not open on a daily basis for entertainment purposes. CHCI believes that education is one of the most effective ways to save the chimpanzees and therefore offers one hour workshops (Chimposiums) to the public on weekends, as well as, other more formal educational programs. If you would like to make reservations for a Chimposium or lend financial support to this family of chimpanzees by becoming a Friend of Washoe, please call (509) 963-2244. A short note about plagiarism: Please note that if you are using this page as a reference in your school term paper or report, that you should follow standard citation methods in order to prevent any accusations of plagiarism. One way to cite this would be: Plagiarism is a major reason why I cannot put much of my research material on-line. I've already encountered some web sites that have copied the material below verbatim without proper citation. Since my dissertation research must be "original", I cannot take the risk that someone will publish my research as their own and thus endanger 7 years of work. It's sad, but academic ethics are low enough to make this a real possibility. Japanese Sign Language (JSL) is a family of complex visual-spatial languages used by Deaf communities in Japan. There is no single standard JSL, although the Tokyo form does have some hegemonic force since many of the TV broadcasts and meetings are sponsored by Tokyo Deaf groups. The national sign languages in Taiwan and Korea apparently have incorporated some JSL signs and forms from the colonial occupation of these countries by Japan prior to World War II. Japanese Sign Language is distinct from spoken/written Japanese in both grammar and lexicon, although many Deaf signers will use Manually Coded Japanese / Pidgin Signed Japanese when signing to hearing or non-native JSL signers. The grammatical system shares many similarities with other national sign languages in its use of the complex visual space available, classifiers, and other complex forms.

Q: How do I sign this word? A: The answer may be no farther than your browser. There are several web sites that provide examples of signs online. Some offer drawings or pictures while others provide video or animation. All of them describe how to make the signs. I decided to put each of them to the test for this feature. With Halloween coming up, I selected six Halloween-associated words:
  • Halloween
  • Costume
  • Devil
  • Ghost
  • Witch
  • Pumpkin
and paid a visit to each one to see how well each one did with these words. The results:

Sign Language Linguistics
American Sign Language (ASL) is a complex visual-spatial language that is used by the Deaf community in the United States and English-speaking parts of Canada. It is a linguistically complete, natural language. It is the native language of many Deaf men and women, as well as some hearing children born into Deaf families. ASL shares no grammatical similarities to English and should not be considered in any way to be a broken, mimed, or gestural form of English. In terms of syntax, for example, ASL has a topic-comment syntax, while english uses Subject-Object-Verb. In fact, in terms of syntax, ASL shares more with spoken Japanese than it does with English. I have some information on Japanese Sign Language as well. Some people have described ASL and other sign languages as "gestural" languages. This is not absolutely correct because hand gestures are only one component of ASL. Facial features such as eyebrow motion and lip-mouth movements are also significant in ASL as they form a crucial part of the grammatical system. In addition, ASL makes use of the space surrounding the signer to describe places and persons that are not present. Sign languages develop specific to their communities and is not universal. For example, ASL is totally different from British Sign Language even though both countries speak English. Many people consider it a shame that there isn't a universal sign language (see below), however it's also a shame that there isn't a universal spoken language, right? I personally enjoy seeing the great variety and diversity of languages and the first topic of conversation when I meet a Deaf person from another country is an exchange of vocabulary: "How do you sign this? How do you sign that?"
