Using the HTML Forms, CGI, PERL examples given in class, create two new interactive HTML pages ON OMEGA with HTML forms that call a CGI/PERL script and return the answer via an HTML page. DO NOT USE THE EXAMPLES SHOWN BELOW.
  • Use CS105/106/200 lab book Labs 1, 2, 3, 4 for ideas for problems. Make a guestbook - our assignment will be to create a Perl CGI script that implements a simple guestbook -type application for your website. This guestbook must keep track of at least 3 different user input parameters (Name, Email, and Message as an example) for display. These parameters will be sent to your script through the use of HTML forms.Your script should keep a file (guestbook.txt) which should contain all guestbook records to date. Requirements

This course targets non-native speakers of Spanish, and is for students who have no Spanish experience or have had one year or less of high school Spanish.     English 1 will read excerpts from Homer's Odyssey . See section 6 for unit assignments. English 1-9 Honors will also continue with daily oral language and in addition, Honors students will also continue the study of 500 SAT vocabulary words. Honors students will read the complete Odyssey. They will have to purchase the Rouse translation. In addition they will complete the section 6 assignments. Composition/Literature will study Steinbeck's The Pearl (read primarily in class). Composition/Literature students also must have an 8 1/2" by 11 " spiral notebook which will only be used in English. Comp/Lit students will also do daily oral language and learn vocabulary in a systematic method

    The Course
    Operating systems are pervasive. They are found in our desktop and laptop computers, our cellphones and PDAs, our cars and washing machines, etc. The operating system is responsible for managing the resources of these devices in a manner that efficiently supports applications while hiding the details of the different technology. This includes the management of concurrent tasks and users, management of storage, protection of data from loss or abuse and interaction with other operating systems. Computer Science 305, Operating Systems, addresses the complex algorithms and data structures that are found in the most common operating systems. We will look at alternative designs and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each and how they impact key functions such as sharing. We will examine the interfaces provided to access operating system functions and to support concurrency, and what is required to implement those interfaces. The project work in Computer Science 305 will provide an opportunity to implement a small number of the algorithms and data structures studied. It is through implementation and experimentation that we learn of many of the unexpected difficulties encountered in systems as complex as an operating system.

    Welcome to the old CS193i home page. The new page is over here . The older material below is from last year. Here's the basic plan for this quarter simple socket programming, HTML, how web browsers and servers work (HTTP), CGI programming in Perl, servlets in Java. The material assumes you have some programming background. I'll give very quick introductions to Perl and Java in lecture. That's about all you can fit in a 10 week quarter, but if I were to force in something else it would probably be server side JSP or PHP programming. Books There is no required text for 193i. I'll give out ample lecture notes, and a great deal of what you need to know is documented online. Here are a few books I recommend if you feel you must buy a book for help in a particular area...
    • Core Web Programming , by Marty Hall, 1998. Covers Java, HTML, HTTP, and CGI. It's a little old, but still quite useful.
    • Learning Perl , by Randal Schwartz. A nice thin book on Perl. (I've written a 20 page Perl handout that should be all you need, but it moves pretty quickly.)
    • Just Java 2 by Peter van der Linden, (4th ed?). An excellent overall introduction to Java. There are many good Java books out there of which this is a fine example.
