As sports return to Afghanistan, so do Olympic hopes
Associated Pres
KABUL, Afghanistan He looks out from his office window onto the cracked, empty stadium below, and he points to the goal. "There," says the head of Afghanistan's Olympic committee, "is where they hanged people." Now, in the new Afghanistan, where peace is a political mantra and most ills are blamed on the last guys who ran the place, the soccer field in Kabul Sports Stadium is used for something different. These days, they use it to play soccer. In a land buffeted by 23 years of war, sports was hardly a priority. But this week, as Afghanistan plans to send its first delegation in three years to an international Olympic meeting, the athletes of an isolated country have a reason, however small, to hope. "We are an independent country again, and we are ready to compete," the Olympic chief, Anwar Jekdalek, said Saturday. "All the world recognizes Afghanistan again." It's not quite that easy. The International Olympic Committee still hasn't reinstated Afghanistan, which it barred in 1999 in part because the harsh Islamic rule of the Taliban militia prevented women from competing.

Home Comment Form The Events Pictures ... About the Author
What is UIT Shooting?
The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), formerly the UIT is the governing body of the International Amateur Shooting Sports at international and world-wide levels of competition, including World Championships and the Olympic Games. USA Shooting is the national governing body for ISSF-style shooting in the United States by authority of the US Olympic Committee and the ISSF. In the Olympics, the shooting sports continue to draw the third-greatest number of countries and impose participation quotas to keep competitors to a manageable number. One of the greatest surges in participation came in 1984, when separate women's events were first added to the Olympic program. The ISSF recognizes a huge number of different shooting events in rifle, pistol, shotgun, and running target though only 17 events are featured in the Olympic Games. While there are great differences between disciplines, all rely on stamina and concentration to successfully shoot so many rounds with such precision. The sport's reliance on such skills makes shooting a sport in which size and age, unlike athletics or gymnastics, have little bearing on success. Oscar Swahn from Sweden was an amazing 72 years old in 1920 when he won his last shooting medal to become the oldest medalist in the history of the Games. The youngest shooter to win a medal was 16 year old Konstantin Lukashik from Belarus, who won a Gold medal in 1992. It is not uncommon for Olympic shooters to have been training for more than 20 years. Due to the competitive longevity of the sport, several shooters have competed in four or more Games.

  • That 1996 marked the first time electronic targets were used for the entire match during the pistol, rifle and running target Olympic events?
  • That USA Shooting earned all but one of the 32 quota slots allowed each country in the Olympic shooting events?
  • That U.S. shooters have earned 44 gold, 25 silver and 20 bronze Olympic medals since 1896?
  • That Los Angeles hosted the largest and smallest Olympic shoots in history; a record 459 shooters from 68 nations at the 1984 Olympic Games but only 41 shooters from 10 nations at the 1932 Games?
  • That fifty-one percent of all U.S. Olympic shooters have been affiliated with the U.S. Armed Forces?
  • That the first woman to win an Olympic shooting medal was U.S. shooter Margaret Thompson Murdock, who claimed silver honors in the 1976 Olympic three-position match in Montreal?
  • That two shooters co-hold the U.S. record for the most medals won in single Olympics with swimmer Mark Spitz? Willis Lee and Lloyd Spooner earned seven medals each in rifle competition at the 1920 Olympics.
  • That only 13 shooters have won two gold medals in individual Olympic competition, and four of them are Americans: rifle shooter Gary Anderson (1964, 68); rifle shooter Morris Fisher (1920, 24); pistol shooter Alfred Lane (1912); and rifle shooter Lones Wigger (1964, 72)?
