Minnesota's Historic Shipwrecks
The cold fresh water of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers have preserved an important part of our history - in shipwrecks! Each one is a unique and integral part of the fabric of America's maritime heritage. Together, they provide physical contact with and offer an exciting opportunity to explore the past. Because they represent a valuable but finite and nonrenewable resource, we must provide for their protection and preservation. If we don't, the first generation to have ready access to shipwrecks will be the last to enjoy them. In the interest of preserving Minnesota's Lake Superior shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, the State Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society has initiated a program of submerged cultural resource management. The Society hopes you will join its effort to preserve our maritime heritage.

Historic Shipwrecks of Perth 1656-1942
Introduction
The overall objective of this report is to describe the historic shipwreck resource that lies adjacent to the Perth metropolitan coastline. Survey region within Western Australia The Western Australian Maritime Museum (the Museum) first began a regional approach to wreck inspection in 1979 with a focus on the northern coast of the State (Sledge, 1979), then Jervoise Bay (McCarthy, 1979), Koombana Bay (McCarthy, 1982a), and the Abrolhos Islands (1982b).
Western Australia has the longest coastline (12,500 kilometres) of any State in Australia and a regional approach to the study of shipwrecks has logistic benefits in the planning and implementation of fieldwork. It provides a focus for management, funding resources and research. Stimulus for the selection of the Perth area for a regional study were twofold. Firstly, as the largest population base in the State is centred within its environs interpretation and publication of material about the historic shipwrecks will have the greatest impact here, servicing the needs of the widest audience. Secondly, wreck inspection requirements were able to optimise the prevailing weather patterns and fieldwork was able to be undertaken at short notice.
Another important factor in the choice of the survey area is that it acted as a major focus for colonial shipping in Western Australia. The Port of Fremantle was the main transportation network node for the State. The concentration of the thirty-eight historic wreck sites in the region reflects the level of shipping that was generated by the development of Perth.

I love shipwrecks. I always have and I always will. Especially the deep and powerful shipwrecks that were sent to the bottom during World War II. Their energy flows to me. They inspire me. And they fulfill me. I am not a professional scuba diver, a professional photographer, or a shipwreck expert. I'm just a subsurface tourist who has had the good fortune to have experienced a large assortment of these wonderous relics in various parts of the world. I present here some of the best of my collection of photographs of these wrecks, along with some words about my dives on them. These are some of my memories of "my" shipwrecks, as they were when I was there, as they will always be for me.

Angra C is a segment of a ship's hull, measuring 15 meters in length and 6,5 meters wide, maximum, mostly of European white oak. It is heavily treenailed, (circa 1300 trunnels observed at ceiling plank level) and has iron bolts through floors and keel. At the NE end, the ship narrows down to what might be the sternpost. There, in an extension of 5,5 meters long to 75 cm wide, there's a rising wood, notched to receive the floors. Below this deadwood, part of the keel is missing. How scary it would have been onboard the Titanic on that fateful night! Maybe we can deal with the emotions if we find out more about who was there and what possessions they had with them. Who was brave in the face of disaster? How did the survivors carry on? The story of the Titanic is a lot more than how the ship looked then and how it looks today. It's the story of people Part of the story of shipwrecks also lies in their discovererspeople like Robert Ballard, Jacques Cousteau, and Mel Fisher. What does it take to be an undersea explorer? What combination of daring and common sense must one have? How do they balance their scientific side with their respect for the dead and respect for the environment? When do they decide to take money for their discoveries, and when do they explore purely for the joy of it? Over 90 photographs show not only vessels ashore and afloat but depict many aspects related to shipwreck, such as notices of sale, artefacts and original documents. There are accounts of heroism and courage but also, sad to say, some of the more unsavoury incidents, which unfortunately take place when a ship is wrecked.
